So much for using my Presto card
Recently, a group of senior ladies, myself included, planned a trip downtown. I have occasionally ridden the bus/light rail and thought this would be a great opportunity to encourage six other seniors to give it a try. To prepare for our outing, I ensured my Presto card, not used since 2023, was still working and had enough funds.

We met at the bus stop and I boarded first. I tapped my Presto card on the big green circle, then looked at the bus driver for confirmation that all was in order. As there was no problem, I boarded the bus. The others followed. When I requested a transfer from the driver, he said none was needed as it was recorded on my Presto card.
We were stopped by an attendant when we exited from Rideau Station. Since most paid cash, they produced their transfer. He scanned my card and said it hadn’t been used since 2023. I explained exactly how I had tapped on the bus but the response was “machines don’t lie.” My friends assured him I had paid. A supervisor was watching and listening. I received a ticket for $260. I could have travelled for free the following day.
I was urged to call the number on the ticket if I didn’t agree with the situation. After five tries and several hours, I was told bluntly it could not be resolved on the phone. I have requested a court date. My senior friends, as tired of ageism, as I am, intend to accompany me. Obviously, my friends will not be using the OC Transpo in the near future, if ever.

Now, the cost for a senior’s pass will rise a whopping 120 per cent, further driving many away from the transit system. Empty vehicles will not pay for our transit deficit. How about good service, machines that do work, friendly, helpful attendants and reasonable rates?

Sell the trains, bring back the buses
There is only one possible solution to the many LRT problems: sell the LRT trains, pave over the tracks and put buses on them. Buses are much more flexible with regard to passenger volume. They work in rain, sleet and snow.
We have lots of immigrants who need jobs. Train some them as bus drivers. Finally, add a year of free bus use to build back ridership.
A win for everyone.
