Cork’s Mercy University Hospital (MUH) has now reopened its emergency department after an earlier closure due to flooding.

The closure was to ensure the safety of patients and staff and to allow for essential maintenance, a statement from the hospital said.

“Mercy University Hospital Cork are pleased to report that full functionality of our Emergency Department has been restored. Thanks to everyone for their patience and understanding,” it said.

Mercy University Hospital (MUH), founded in 1857 by the Sisters of Mercy, is a leading public voluntary teaching hospital located in Cork city centre near the River Lee.

MUH treats more than 137,000 patients annually and provides a range of complex diagnostic, medical, and surgical services, operating as a Model 3 hospital with 24/7 acute care.

The hospital is affiliated with University College Cork (UCC).
