A second woman who accused Conor McGregor of sexually assaulting her has filed a civil case for damages when no criminal charges were brought against him.
This woman, described as a vice president at a “high-profile financial institution” on Wall Street in the US, accused McGregor of sexually assaulting her in a toilet after a basketball game in Miami in 2023.
The lawsuit has been filed in Florida this week, according to a report from ESPN.
The complainant, 49, is from Florida and alleges she met McGregor during an NBA final between Miami Heat and Denver Nuggets on June 9, 2023 in the Kaseya Center, the home arena of Miami Heat.
McGregor was drinking alcohol and during an on-court skit to promote a pain relief spray, he punched Miami Heat’s mascot Bernie so hard he was hospitalised, the lawsuit alleges.
When the woman was leaving after the game with an acquaintance, she was stopped by someone in McGregor’s team, the lawsuit alleges.
They grabbed her wrist and told her McGregor had told them to get her, it is alleged.
When she asked to be let go, they refused and said ‘Conor will kill me if I lose you,’ it is alleged.
McGregor then grabbed the woman’s hand or wrist and brought her into a cubicle in the men’s toilet, assaulting her in a stall, it is alleged.
The woman’s acquaintance was stopped by Kaseya Centre staff from following her into the stall, it is alleged.
The complainant’s lawyer, Jim Dunn told ESPN that his client filed the civil suit because it is “the only avenue she has to pursue justice,” after Miami-Dade County decided not to bring criminal charges.
“After a thorough investigation at the time, the State’s Attorney concluded that there was no case to pursue,” McGregor’s attorney, Barbara Llanes, said in an emailed statement to ESPN.
“Almost two years and at least three lawyers later the plaintiff has a new false story. We are confident that this case too will be dismissed.”
McGregor, now 36, also denied the allegations in 2023.
The lawsuit seeks medical treatment costs, compensatory damages and other relief, ESPN reports.
Mr Dunn, wrote in an email to ESPN that his client is pursing the civil case to “raise awareness and encourage others to report sexual assault.”
“My client has thought long and hard about the decision to pursue this civil case, and is fearful of the effect it may have on her job on Wall Street,” Mr Dunn said.
“Nonetheless, her main goal in filing this suit is to raise awareness and encourage others to report sexual assault.”
The complaint alleges that McGregor “intentionally engaged in unlawful sexual contact” without the woman’s “consent or permission,” ESPN reports.
Meanwhile, Dublin woman Nikita Hand, who also took a civil case against McGregor after the State chose not to bring criminal charges against him for alleged sexual assault, is due in the High Court on Thursday in a bid to restrain publication of CCTV footage used in the trial.
Ms Hand, 35, was awarded almost €250,000 damages after a High Court jury upheld her civil claim in November that she was raped by the Mixed Martial Arts fighter in a Dublin hotel in December 2018.
Ms Hand is to apply for an injunction to prevent dissemination, circulation or publication of CCTV footage shown at the trial.
