Muscat – The weight of students’ backpacks has been a growing concern among parents, teachers and students alike. Heavy school bags can lead to physical strain, discomfort and long-term health issues. We asked Muscat Daily readers for their suggestions for how schools can address this problem and reduce the burden on students. Here’s what they said –
Asma al Harthi, Homemaker
I believe that schools should focus more on digital learning to reduce the number of books students carry. Providing tablets with all the study materials can significantly lessen the physical burden on students, allowing them to focus more on their learning instead of lugging heavy bags.
Asish Menon, Dance teacher
I believe schools need to reassess their curriculum to focus on the essentials. Too many textbooks are often unnecessary, and much of the study material could be streamlined. Offering students e-books or access to digital resources will help lighten their load, both mentally and physically.
Ahmed Khan, Student
We already have a lot of pressure from exams and extra classes, and then we have to carry so many books every day. If schools could allow us to leave some books in our lockers or only bring them on certain days, it would really help.
Priya Krishnan, Homemaker
Schools should introduce more integrated study sessions reducing the need to carry extra books home. Creating a better balance between academic pressure and student well-being is essential. There must be more practical and outdoor activities rather than sticking to books.
Syed al Farsi, Banker
Schools should encourage more project-based and practical learning. By integrating technology into the learning process and reducing reliance on textbooks, we can alleviate much of the physical burden on students.
Ramesh Iyer, Private sector employee
Schools must understand the need for balance. One simple solution would be to alternate subject days, where students only bring the necessary materials for the subjects scheduled. Also, better lockers and storage at school can help students avoid carrying heavy loads daily.
Subia Musheer, Private sector employee
Following everyday class schedule to a tee and carrying the textbooks that are indeed required will reduce backpack weight to a considerable extent. Keeping some books in classroom desks and cupboards will help too. Extra stationery and other materials should be kept in check.
Naziya Mukhari, Private sector employee
Schools can reduce backpack weight by adopting digital textbooks, providing lockers for storage and using shared supplies. Encouraging lightweight materials and implementing block scheduling can help minimise what students carry daily. Educating students on effective packing strategies will also help.
