Amman, Jordan – An Arab, Egyptian and Palestinian plan is in place to rebuild Gaza without displacing its residents, Jordan’s prime minister said.
Jaafar Hassan said, “Our position is clear and firm regarding displacement. No settlement, no displacement, and no solutions at the expense of Jordan… The solution to the Palestinian issue remains in Palestine.”
Hassan added that Jordan is working with Egypt and Arab brothers to formulate a unified Arab position regarding the reconstruction of Gaza, and will not act unilaterally on issues related to the future of Palestine and the region.
Ayman Safadi, Jordan’s foreign minister, stressed that Jordan’s position is based on the principle that “Jordan is for Jordanians, and Palestine is for Palestinians”.
“We have our vision and Trump has his,” Safadi said. “We believe Gaza can be rebuilt without displacing its residents.”
He stressed that Jordan’s position was clear, “work toward a just and comprehensive peace without displacing Palestinians”.
Egypt has said it is working on a ‘comprehensive vision’ for the reconstruction of the war-torn Gaza Strip that guarantees Palestinians the right to stay on their land, unlike the proposal put forward by US President Donald Trump.
The Egyptian foreign ministry said it hoped to co-operate with the Trump administration to reach “a just settlement of the Palestinian cause”.
“Egypt affirms its intention to present a comprehensive vision for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, in a manner that ensures the Palestinian people stay on their land, and in line with the legitimate and legal rights of this people,” it added.
Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al Sisi also told Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in a phone call on Tuesday that the reconstruction of Gaza must happen “without displacing Palestinians”, his office said.
Cairo is due to host an emergency Arab summit to discuss the serious developments for Palestinians on February 27, while Jordan’s King Abdullah said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had invited Arab leaders to Riyadh at an unspecified date.
$53bn needed to rebuild Gaza Strip: UN
A United Nations report has estimated that rebuilding the Gaza Strip, devastated by the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, will require US$53.1bn. Of this, US$20.5bn will be essential in the first three years to address urgent recovery and reconstruction needs.
The report, requested by the UN General Assembly, outlines a phased approach for reconstruction, covering short, medium, and long-term goals. It highlights that over 60% of Gaza’s housing has been destroyed since the conflict erupted in October 2023. The housing sector alone accounts for US$15.2bn, or 30% of the total estimated costs.
Critical areas requiring funding include trade and industry (US$6.9bn), healthcare (US$6.9bn), agriculture (US$4.2bn), and education (US$2.6bn). Additionally, US$1.9bn is allocated for environmental cleanup, addressing hazards such as unexploded ordnance and asbestos in the rubble.
