Muscat – Oman has claimed the first place at the Sheikha Fadia al Saad al Sabah Scientific Research and Projects Competition held in Kuwait for the academic year 2023/2024.
The winning project – Biocide from Jasmine Leaves – was developed by ninth-grade students Rahaf bint Walid al Shili and Fatima bint Yousef al Ma’awli of Durrat al Hashemia Basic Education School in South Batinah. The project was guided by their biology teacher Suad al Hasani.
Held among students of the Arab world, the competition began with an exhibition and academic dialogue focused on the theme ‘Education of the Future: Innovation and Technology for Sustainability’. The second day featured discussions on creative skills for sustainable education, culminating in a ceremony where the winners were announced by Sheikha Fadia al Saad al Sabah.
Oman’s participation in the competition reflects its commitment to fostering innovation and technical skills among students. The Ministry of Education’s Innovation and Scientific Olympiad Department highlighted the importance of such events in enhancing students’ scientific knowledge and practical capabilities. The ministry aims to expose students to global innovations, enrich their experiences and prepare them for future challenges.
Oman’s victory in the Intermediate Stage category is a testament to the country’s growing focus on education and innovation, particularly in science and technology.
Launched in 1999, the Sheikha Fadia al Saad al Sabah Scientific Research and Projects Competition is an annual event for middle and high school girls, encouraging them to present innovative projects. It focuses on environmental topics at the middle school level and expands to broader technical fields for high school students. This year, the competition saw participation from 12 countries.
