India’s high commissioner didn’t reach for the usual diplomatic construction when asked about the Thilamalé bridge, now slipped to 2027. “If you ask me whether we are satisfied with the pace: no.” G Balasubramanian presented his credentials three months after the state visit that reset relations with New Delhi. On the eve of India’s Independence Day, he spoke to the Maldives Independent about what the reset has delivered. On the debt relief announced last year as a 40 per cent cut in repayments, he set out an explanation: the US$800 million credit line was capped at the amount actually drawn, cancelling the Maldives’ liability on money it had never received. Also in the interview: why India wants the Maldives borrowing in rupees, a free trade agreement both sides now say could be done by December, and the commodities quota that keeps flowing even when India bans exports to everyone else....

Dr Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara: Sierra Leone Telegraph: 13 August 2026: I have read the statement issued by the All Peoples Congress on the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Amendment) Bill 2025. I support it. I support the constitutional guarantee of a minimum of thirty percent representation for women in political nominations. I support the broadening of political participation for Sierra Leoneans holding dual citizenship. I support the retention of the First-Past-the-Post constituency-based electoral system, because the bond between a citizen and the Member of Parliament who answers to that citizen by name is one of the few direct relationships our democracy has, and it should be restored rather than abolished. And I support the retention of the fifty-five percent threshold for the election of a President, because a country as diverse as ours should require anyone who seeks its highest office to go out and earn the trust of Sierra...

By Melba Chipepo-Kaure. Protecting the region against run-away fires is a shared responsibility that affects every resident, said the Chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council, Lazarus Kanelombe, at an ordinary council meeting in Swakopmund on Monday 10 August. Lazarus Kanelombe “It is a shared responsibility that needs the continued commitment of government, the private sector and every resident of the Erongo Region,” he said. In recent times, the Erongo Region has experienced significant wildfires affecting parts of the Dâures and Karibib Constituencies. “These incidents resulted in extensive damage to grazing land and posed a serious threat to livestock, wildlife, infrastructure and the livelihoods of affected farming communities,” he added. The council is working closely with relevant government institutions, emergency services, farmers, volunteers, traditional leaders and other stakeholders to support coordinated firefighting efforts to contain the fires and minimise further losses. Kanelombe expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Erongo Regional...
