The City of Windhoek’s Council last week announced the approval of the Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy 2026-2030, designed to strengthen preparedness and resilience against disasters and climate-related risks.
The Council identified flash floods, informal dwelling fires, veld fires, chemical spills, cold waves, and motor vehicle accidents.
The strategy is expected to respond to these risks as well as rising threats posed by rapid urbanisation and socio-economic vulnerabilities, particularly in informal settlements.
The comprehensive framework was developed through an extensive consultative process led by the Department of Economic Development and Community Services since August 2023, guided by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction Sendai Framework and national policy instruments.
The approved strategy will also guide proactive disaster prevention, risk mitigation, community awareness, and coordinated emergency response efforts over the next five years.
