The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum has confirmed that there will be no power outages or load-shedding schedules during the current summer season. According to Ministry Spokesperson Mahmoud Naji, key measures have been implemented to permanently secure the country’s electricity needs. These include operating regasification units in Sokhna and Damietta to handle peak consumption, alongside securing full contracts for liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from diverse geographical sources. Furthermore, Naji revealed that the ministry has cleared all outstanding debts to foreign oil companies. This settlement has restored investor confidence, prompting a strong return to exploration activities. As part of its forward-looking strategy, the ministry plans to drill 101 new exploratory wells across the Mediterranean and onshore regions by the end of the year, with new oil and gas discoveries expected to be announced soon. 2026-06-14 02:02:47

The Minister of Defence, Gen Christopher Musa (retd.), on Saturday said the ongoing conflicts involving Israel, Iran, the United States, Russia and Ukraine were making it difficult for Nigeria and other countries to procure military equipment needed to tackle insecurity. He also lamented the absence of a comprehensive national database, saying it was hampering the efforts of security agencies, particularly the police, in tracking criminals and preventing crimes across the country. The minister stated this in Abuja while delivering a keynote address at the Nigerian People’s Strategic Conference and Defence Exhibition 2026. Speaking on the challenges facing the country’s security architecture, Musa said global conflicts had disrupted access to military hardware, underscoring the need for Nigeria to strengthen local defence production. “With the war in Ukraine, Russia, Iran, US and Israel, it has been extremely difficult getting equipment. Most times, they do down payment because they have the money and...

Ásia, Deutsche Welle, Inglês - Mercenaries and defectors abound in Sudan war
2026-06-14 01:52:59
When Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan welcomed Al-Nour Ahmed Adam — also known as Al-Nour Al-Qubba and a former senior commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia — into the ranks of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) earlier this year, it was one of the most high-profile defections in the Sudanese civil war to date. While the SAF controls the capital Khartoum, Port Sudan and large parts of the east and center of the country, its rival RSF holds vast areas in the west of the country, particularly in Darfur, including the city of El Fasher. Al-Nour Al-Qubba is not the only defector: He was followed a few weeks later by high-ranking RSF commander, Ali Rizq Allah, also known as Al-Savannah. Human Rights Watch (HRW) has reviewed videos purportedly showing these two defectors during the siege of El Fasher, where the international NGO has documented war crimes committed by the RSF,...

The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) is set to terminate the construction contract for Lango Palace, valued at 3.5 billion shillings, currently held by CMD Investment Limited. The move follows the contractor’s abandonment of the site after receiving a government down payment of 900 million shillings after the construction work began in 2024. Yerosa Nyangoma, Assistant Commissioner in Charge of Procurement and Disposal at OPM, confirmed recently during her visit in Lango that the termination process is underway. She explained that the Permanent Secretary has written to the Solicitor General for guidance before final action is taken. Eng. Geoffrey Enen Okello, a member of the contracts management team representing the Lango Cultural Institution, revealed that CMD subcontracted another local company to begin work, but progress stalled due to non‑payment of workers. He noted that the institution has long pushed for termination of the contract, citing repeated delays. Willy Kagere...

Upon learning United States President Donald Trump was looking for African nations to take in deported third-country migrants, Eswatini was among the first to volunteer. Now lawyers in the southern African kingdom are challenging the legality of the deal, as deportees speak out about the conditions of their detention. So far, 19 migrants deported from the US have been detained in a prison south of the capital Mbabane. Two of the 19 have so far been released and repatriated. Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Rwanda and South Sudan have also agreed to accept deportees, with Sierra Leone the latest African country to follow suit. More than 40 deportees in total have been sent from the US to Africa as part of these agreements.
