Cool fire emits from the potted plant in the backyard at night; it is the glowworm. A yawn, a roll on the back, with four powerful paws playfully punching the air; it is the lion, king of the jungle. Water gently hits the shore, sings a splash-splosh song, and rolls back silently into the night; it is the ocean. Formally called Aurea, an eagle, America’s symbol of strength, freedom and resilience, soars up above the 88,000 heads gathered at the Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama, gliding in and out of sight repeatedly, to the wild ecstacy of the crowd, before finally perching right on the kick-off spot in the centre-circle. Fireworks disappeared into the sky. The four natural elements – fire, land, air and water – are complete. They combine in equal proportions to forge the extraordinary spectacle fans are about to witness as they scream for the football messiah,...

Ásia, Deutsche Welle, Inglês - Egypt's delicate balancing act in the Iran war
2026-06-11 21:28:01
The conflict between the US, Israel and Iran has pushed regional heavyweight Egypt into a diplomatic and strategic dilemma. Egypt is not only a close ally of the US and Gulf states — it is a signatory to the 1979 Camp David Accords with Israel — but was also on the verge of restoring full diplomatic ties with Iran in early 2026. Cairo’s tightrope walk has so far included publicly condemning Iranian attacks on Gulf states while offering limited military support. It has sought to position itself as a mediator between Tehran and Washington, alongside parallel efforts by Pakistan, Turkey and Qatar. President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi also visited the United Arab Emirates in May. “Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi views the conflict primarily as a threat to domestic stability,” Michelle Pace, a Middle East analyst and academic visitor at the University of Oxford, told DW. “Egypt’s core objective is to stay out of the Iran war while containing its economic and security fallout.” However,...

Henry Musasizi delivered his first budget speech as Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development on Thursday. The 84.4 trillion shilling 2026/2027 budget is aimed at implementing the government’s Tenfold Growth Strategy, aimed at growing to 500 billion dollars by 2040 from 53 billion in 2025. The economy is estimated to have grown by 6.4 percent to 69.3 billion dollars or about 250.4 trillion shillings, in nominal terms. The minister looks forward to the “imminent confirmation” in March 2027 of Uganda’s graduation from the category of Least Developed Countries (LDC. He targets lowering sovereign risk, unlocking premium international investment capital, and positioning the country as a highly competitive, self-determined economic engine on the continent. Also, the country is expected to start producing and selling oil starting early in the first quarter of the year, with 1.44 trillion shillings expected from oil revenues. This would end the 17-year wait since the...
