A broken lyre for a tail. A butter knife for a horn. A dinghy where the fins should be. Afzal Shafiu ‘Afu’ has spent almost a decade imagining the creatures that might inherit the ocean once we are finished with it. Seventeen illustrations, an installation built entirely from waste collected at the Malé swim track and a specimen so convincing that real fish came over to investigate it. He is quick to say he is not an environmentalist. “I am doing my part as an artist. This is how I respond to my environment and society.” Angel Shujau on ‘Ocean Junk Reimagined’, at Gallery 350 until 15 September. https://maldivesindependent.com/arts-and-culture/ocean-junk-reimagined-a-field-guide-to-the-reef-that-replaces-us-ca4e Facebook

Ásia, Deutsche Welle, Inglês - UN approves world map reflecting true size of Africa

A yearslong push to change the default view of the Earth came to a vote at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday with 164 countries in favor of a new map, the United States against it and six abstentions. Known as the Equal Earth cartographic projection, the map “offers a more accurate representation of the sizes of continental landmasses and to this end is a relevant option for improving the accuracy of the cartographic representation of the world,” according to the resolution, which was spearheaded by several African countries. Togo‘s foreign minister, Robert Dussey, told the UN maps “shape our understanding of the world.” “They guide education, nourish the imagination, and influence collective perceptions,” he said. “They are, therefore, never neutral, when they present a distorted image of our planet, they risk perpetuating inaccurate representation that are passed down through generation.” No, Greenland is nowhere near as big as...

KAMPALA – The long-delayed construction of Parliament’s new chambers has entered a decisive phase after Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth gave ROKO Construction a strict 10-month deadline to complete the project. The Speaker announced the ultimatum during Wednesday, September 2nd plenary sitting, saying the Parliamentary Commission had resolved to enforce June 30, 2027 as the final completion date. The decision followed a comprehensive inspection of the new parliamentary chamber site by the Parliamentary Commission on August 26, 2026. ROKO officials who attended the meeting with the Commission and project consultants reportedly committed in writing to deliver the project within the new deadline. “The completion of the Chamber shall be achieved by June 30th, 2027. The contractor has made a commitment in writing, and we shall closely monitor execution to ensure this deadline is strictly honoured,” Oboth said. The Speaker said the Commission had reviewed the causes of the delays, including structural...

Albert David KAMARA: Sierra Leone Telegraph: 04 September 2026: What is unfolding inside the SLPP today is not politics, it is a full‑scale institutional hijack. The First Lady’s nationwide political parade, powered by state vehicles, state security, public funds, government media, and a carefully planted network of loyalists inside the party hierarchy, has become the most radioactive symbol of double standards in Sierra Leone’s democratic space. This is not ambition. This is a state‑funded political machine masquerading as First Lady activities, a machine built with resources that belong to citizens, not to a family dynasty. While genuine party stewards, long‑standing elites, and respected stakeholders are told to “focus on their jobs,” the President’s wife is allowed to operate as a de‑facto flagbearer, touring the nation with privileges no other aspirant could ever dream of accessing. The contradiction is not subtle, it is catastrophic. Ministers and appointees are prohibited from early...
