Liverpool’s highly rated 18-year-old defender, Ifeanyi Ndukwe will be unable to play competitive football for the club in 2026 because he does not currently qualify for a UK work permit under post-Brexit rules. Ndukwe, who joined Liverpool from Austria Vienna in a deal worth £2.6m, has impressed during the club’s pre-season campaign and has already featured prominently for new manager, Andoni Iraola. But despite his performances, the Austria youth international cannot play in Liverpool’s competitive matches this year because he failed to reach the points target required for a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE). BBC reported on Tuesday that the development means “Ndukwe can play in Liverpool’s remaining friendly against Como on August 16, but not in their competitive fixtures once the season begins.” The 6ft 6in defender has been given an extended opportunity to impress during pre-season because Liverpool are short of options at centre-back. Joe Gomez suffered an injury...

2026-08-12 03:38:00
Libya‘s National Oil Corporation (NOC) said Tuesday that fires at a fuel storage facility had been quickly brought under control after a drone attack. The Zawiya oil complex west of Tripoli is home to the country’s largest refinery and has been the scene of repeated armed clashes between warring factions fighting for primacy in the country since the fall of former strongman leader Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. What happened in the drone attack on Libya’s Zawiya oil refinery? Monday’s attack by an as yet undeclared actor targeted the Zawiya Oil Refining Company with explosives-laden drones, causing a tank containing about 4.5 million liters (1.2 million gallons) of gasoline to collapse after a fire. Owner Brega Petroleum Marketing said the fires had been brought under control far faster than expected, with engineers telling Reuters news agency that damage had been limited, though operations were interrupted. In a statement on X, Abdulhamid...

MBABANE – The Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) is expected to submit its next tariff review application for the 2027/28 financial year. This is expected to happen between mid-October and early November this year, with any resulting tariff taking effect from April 2027. EEC General Manager-Customer Services James Mabundza said the company is still assessing its financial and operational requirements and that it is too early to determine the level of any tariff adjustment that can be ultimately proposed. Speaking during a breakfast engagement with editors from various media houses at SibaneSami Hotel yesterday, Mabundza stressed that an application by EEC does not automatically translate into an increase for consumers. “The numbers would have added up by the time of application,” he said, noting that the eventual outcome would depend on the regulatory review process. The process is governed by the tariff methodology of the Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority (ESERA), which...

President Yoweri Museveni has finally sworn in three ministers whose assumption of office had been delayed over questions surrounding their citizenship, bringing to an end the uncertainty that had surrounded their appointments. The swearing-in has also reignited the sensitive debate over dual citizenship, national identity and where the loyalty of public officials ultimately lies. The three ministers are Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, who has taken oath as Minister of Foreign Affairs; Shartsi Kutesa Musherure, who becomes Minister of State for Finance, Planning and Economic Development in charge of Microfinance; and Witonze Juma, the new Minister of State for Internal Affairs. Museveni presided over the ceremony at State House Entebbe on Tuesday. But beyond formally welcoming the ministers into office, the President used the occasion to send a pointed message on loyalty. Museveni said the introduction of dual citizenship was intended to address Uganda’s difficult history, but stressed that citizens holding more...
