Keorapetse rubbishes Saleshando’s censorship cry Never shy of a word or two, Speaker of the National Assembly, Dithapelo Keorapetse, has rubbished accusations of censorship and gate-keeping tendencies leveled against him. In an exclusive interview with The Voice, the 44-year-old legislator insisted every decision he makes is anchored in the constitution and established parliamentary practices. Keorapetse’s response comes following criticism from former comrade, Botswana Congress Party (BCP) President, Dumelang Saleshando, who claimed opposition MPs were being frustrated by both the Speaker and the Clerk. Saleshando also accused his one-time ally of deliberately blocking certain Bills from reaching the floor of the House. However, the former Selibe Phikwe West MP defended his record, welcoming public scrutiny while laying out the legal framework that governs his office. “The Office of the Speaker is a public office, and I hold the firm view that the public is entitled to understand how decisions affecting Parliament...

Ásia, Deutsche Welle, Inglês - Suspected oil thieves dead after inhaling fumes
2026-09-04 17:58:40
A Nigerian environmental NGO says that at least 37 people died in an attempt to tap oil from a loading vessel in the south of the country illegally.  Most of them died as a result of inhaling hazardous fumes, the Youth and Advocacy Centre said.  Nigerian authorities were yet to issue a death toll but had acknowledged a fatal incident in which people were killed, apparently while trying to steal crude oil.  What do we know about the case?  The incident took place overnight on Thursday in Okrika in Rivers State in the oil-rich Niger Delta in the south of the country.  The environmental group said it happened at a jetty as a vessel was loading oil from the Indorama Eleme Petrochemical through the Port Harcourt Refinery. The people who died were “suspected oil thieves” trying to siphon the commodity off into boats at an “illegal tapping point.”   The Youth and...

KAMPALA – Uganda has secured a massive $1.7 billion (about Shs6.42 trillion) health financing package from the United States to strengthen the country’s health sector over the next four years. The deal was sealed on Thursday through a Strategic Objective Agreement (SOAG) covering the period 2026 to 2030, opening a new chapter in the longstanding health partnership between Uganda and the US. The agreement gives Uganda direct access to US government support for the prevention, detection and response to emerging and existing infectious disease threats. It also marks a major shift in how American health assistance will be delivered, with more funding expected to flow directly to the Government of Uganda rather than predominantly through non-governmental organisations, private charities and community groups. The agreement operationalises the Memorandum of Understanding signed on December 10, 2025, under which the US committed the $1.7 billion support package. Finance Minister Henry Musasizi welcomed the...
