OPINION | Abdulla Shahid resigned as MDP president in August to seek the party’s presidential nomination. Writing for the Maldives Independent, he argues that the Maldives is generating wealth without delivering security: resorts are full and the economy is growing, but families are struggling with the cost of living, dollars are hard to come by and housing is out of reach. He also argues that economic confidence depends on confidence in institutions – an independent judiciary, a free media, an accountable government – and that public trust in them is eroding. “Growth that does not reach every household is not progress,” he writes.
