Sunday Standard BoB warns fiscal strain could squeeze private sector  Botswana’s worsening fiscal position is emerging as a growing threat to economic recovery, with the Bank of Botswana warning that rising government borrowing could drain liquidity from the financial system and squeeze credit to businesses. In its April Monetary Policy Report, the central bank painted a picture of an economy facing pressure from multiple fronts: weak growth, rising inflation, tighter liquidity and an expanding government financing gap. .ihc-locker-wrap{} There’s more to this story But to keep reading, we need you to subscribe. Remand for man accused of stabbing lover and fleeing to SA with child A man who made headline news earlier this year, when he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend before abducting her six-year-old son and fleeing with the child to South Africa, is back in Botswana. Omaatla Bokang Makhura, 36, appeared before Extension II Magistrates Court on Monday (27 April) morning charged with unlawful wounding as well as smuggling of persons. Complicating the cross-border saga further, Makhura maintains he is the little boy’s father. He is accused of attacking his lover at Gaborone’s Partial location on 20 February, reportedly stabbing her several times with a knife and inflicting serious injuries. The circumstances surrounding the bloody fall-out remain unclear, with investigators still piecing together exactly what happened. Afterwards, he is said to have kidnapped her son, allegedly taking the boy without valid travel documentation and crossing into South Africa through an unauthorized...

Ásia, Deutsche Welle, Inglês - Did US aid cuts worsen Ebola outbreak in Central Africa?
2026-05-21 17:25:13
Since the turn of the millennium, there has been a new Ebola outbreak almost every year. The current epidemic, however, is different. Most Ebola outbreaks, including a devastating epidemic several years ago that caused at least 11,000 deaths in West Africa between 2014 and 2016, can be traced back to the Zaire strain, for which a vaccine has now been developed. The latest outbreak is, however, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, named after a region in Uganda where it was first reported in 2007. There is neither a vaccine nor drug to fight this strain, which kills around one in three of those it infects. The current outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda is the third and already deadliest Bundibugyo-related epidemic so far. As of Wednesday, at least 139 people were thought to have died, with an additional 600 suspected cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). “I’m deeply...
