President Bola Tinubu has directed heads of security agencies to rescue all abducted persons and ensure that no terrorist or bandit camp remains anywhere in Nigeria, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), said Thursday. Musa, who spoke to State House correspondents on Thursday after a security meeting presided over by the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said Tinubu also asked the service chiefs and other security heads to guarantee a safe environment for Nigerians to vote in the elections scheduled for January. A new report released by the Ministry of Health shows, lives of thirty-three children under the age of five are lost every day due to diarrheal diseases and yet such deaths can be prevented with simple practices such as hand washing. The report, ‘The cost of inaction on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene’, released at the ongoing Annual Health Promotion and Disease Prevention conference in Kampala shows that only about ten percent of Ugandans practice proper hand washing as prescribed by the World Health Organization to always use soap and clean water after visiting the washrooms and before touching or eating food. Sharing results of the report, Dr Herbert Nabaasa, the Commissioner for Health Services in charge of Environmental Health said while Ugandans are aware that handing washing is important, 90% still cannot do it, contributing to a high burden of preventable diseases currently estimated at 75 percent. Held on the sidelines of the 10th EITI Global Conference, the meeting provided an opportunity to present Cameroon’s commitments to transparency and good governance in the extractive sector. Discussions focused on implementing corrective measures under EITI Requirement 1.3, particularly ensuring the free and effective participation of civil society in the EITI process. The Minister also outlined plans to strengthen the EITI National Secretariat through the appointment of a Deputy National Coordinator and technical staff. A waiver, granted on the strength of a written plan, spared it a drop to Tier 3. The country has been here before: plans bought the same reprieve in 2012, 2013 and 2020. This year’s report flags official complicity. Three immigration officials named in a December bribery verdict “continue to perform their jobs while reportedly under investigation”. Research by the Public Interest Law Centre suggests why so few cases are counted. It describes a system that only recognises the most extreme exploitation, leaving migrant workers in a “hierarchy of suffering”. The waiver can only be used once.
