ZAMBIA’S first indigenous Zambia Air Force (ZAF) commander, Lieutenant General Peter Dingiswayo Zuze, has died at the age of 83 after an illness.
Lt Gen Zuze died on Monday, with his death announced by the Zambia Air Force and confirmed by his family.
In a statement, ZAF described the retired pilot as an accomplished aviator, distinguished general and pioneering military leader who served the Republic of Zambia with honour, dedication and distinction.
The Air Force said Lt Gen Zuze played a significant role in the early transformation and development of the service, helping to lay the foundation upon which the modern Zambia Air Force has been built.
“Through his leadership and contribution, he helped lay the foundation upon which the modern Air Force has been built,” the statement said.
ZAF described his death as a profound loss to the Air Force, the defence force and the nation, saying his legacy of leadership, patriotism, professionalism and selfless service would remain an enduring part of the country’s military history.
ZAF Commander Lieutenant General Msitu Nyoni conveyed condolences to the bereaved family, relatives and friends.
Funeral arrangements, including details of the funeral service and burial, are expected to be announced in due course.
Meanwhile, Lt Gen Zuze’s son, Zoran Zuze, described his father as a loving and caring man who was highly disciplined, firm and honest. “He was a very disciplined, and very firm and very honest person, always demanded very highest standards from everybody,” Mr Zuze said.
He said the late general was also a devoted father who did his best for his children and the country.
Mr Zuze said his father will be remembered for his contribution to Zambia during a difficult period in the country’s history, when the newly independent nation faced numerous challenges.
Mr Zuze added that his father helped maintain the country’s security and stability during the challenging period.
“He managed to keep the country secure and hold things together during that very challenging period,” he said.
Lt Gen Zuze leaves behind four children and two grandchildren.
His funeral is currently being held in the Chilongolo area of Makeni, Lusaka, as the country mourns a military leader remembered for his pioneering contribution to Zambia’s defence and national development. https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
