Kenya Aviation Workers Call Off Strike, Resume Duties

Kenya’s aviation workers have called off their strike and resumed normal duties after reaching a return-to-work agreement with employers. The deal provides for the immediate remittance of agency fees owed to the Kenya Aviation Workers Union and clears the way for fresh negotiations with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority over a new collective bargaining agreement. The union has raised concerns about new pay guidelines issued by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission but will seek to address them through the negotiations. The agreement also covers a long-running recognition dispute between KAWU and Jambojet, which will be resolved through the courts. Workers who took part in the strike will be protected from victimisation, intimidation or disciplinary action. Both sides have committed to resolving future disputes through negotiations and established mechanisms.

Namibia Rejects US Health Data-Sharing Proposal

Namibia has rejected a United States proposal involving the sharing of health data and biological specimens, citing concerns that the agreement could undermine the country’s sovereignty, privacy laws and control over its biological resources. The dispute has complicated negotiations over more than N$730 million in potential funding for the country’s HIV and tuberculosis programmes. The US said that the proposed agreement would only involve aggregate rather than personally identifiable data. Namibia is exploring alternative funding options to ensure the continued delivery of essential HIV services if a mutually acceptable agreement cannot be reached.

Gabon Victims Demand Accountability a Decade After Post-Election Violence

A decade after violence erupted following former president Ali Bongo’s disputed re-election in Gabon, survivors and relatives of those killed are still demanding the truth and accountability. The unrest began after Bongo was declared the winner of the 2016 election. Security forces launched an assault on opposition leader Jean Ping’s headquarters, marking the beginning of several days of unrest, looting and violent repression. The true death toll remains unknown. Survivors are now calling for a full investigation. Questions persist over the possible involvement of French nationals and whether French authorities fully cooperated with investigations into allegations of crimes against humanity.

South African Airline Defends Low Flypast Over Cape Town Stadium

South African airline Airlink has defended a dramatic low-altitude flypast involving two aircraft over Cape Town’s packed DHL Stadium before the Springboks’ rugby match against New Zealand. Flight tracking analysis suggested the lead aircraft passed less than 50 feet above the top of the stadium, prompting criticism and concerns about the risks of the manoeuvre. However, Airlink said the stunt was carefully planned and approved by aviation authorities, with highly experienced crews after rehearsing safety and speed limits. Many South Africans have praised the pilots’ precision and skill.

Niger Uprising Exposes Cracks in Military, Russia Ties

Niger’s failed military uprising has exposed deepening frustration within the armed forces, where many soldiers face poor pay, inadequate equipment and dangerous conditions while battling persistent Islamist insurgencies. The unrest has also raised questions about the stability of President Abdourahamane Tchiani’s military government and its reliance on Russia’s Africa Corps, which reportedly helped suppress the uprising. Analysts said that the events highlight underlying structural problems within Niger’s military. They said that Russian support may help stabilise the junta in the short term without addressing the grievances and security challenges threatening its long-term survival.

KAMPALA: A multi-billion-shilling gold fraud syndicate has been smashed in Kampala after a Dubai businessman was allegedly conned out of US$4 million (about Shs14.8 billion) in a fake gold deal, with 16 suspects arrested and four police officers dismissed from the force for allegedly guarding the illegal operation. The dramatic crackdown followed a complaint lodged last month by the Dubai businessman, whose identity has been withheld, at the Minerals Police Unit in Naguru. The complainant told police that Moses Asiimwe and his associates, operating under Real Sunex Limited, had fraudulently obtained US$4 million from him through a bogus gold transaction. But detectives say the alleged fraudsters were not done. After engaging the complainant, police reportedly discovered that the suspects were preparing to receive another US$4 million (about Shs14.8 billion) from the same investor using a similar fraudulent arrangement. This prompted a joint intelligence operation involving the Uganda Police Force and...

The crisis in the African Great Lakes is a regional power struggle in which the Forces démocratiques de libération du Rwanda (FDLR) have taken political, institutional and military structures hostage in both Kinshasa and Bujumbura. The FDLR’s influence reaches into the Congolese army, political institutions, local administrations, armed groups and mineral networks. Through its alliance with elements within the Forces armées de la République démocratique du Congo (FARDC), its relationship with the Wazalendo and its intrinsic connection with Burundi’s CNDD-FDD regime, the FDLR has become the central political force shaping the security architecture of the Great Lakes. FDLR’s DRC and Burundi state capture Kinshasa has become dependent on the FDLR and its networks to wage war against its enemies. Bujumbura has become part of the same strategic system. The result is a regional bloc built around an armed ideology, a shared security agenda and the preservation of political power through...

By Coen Welsh. * Play it as it lies is one of the first and most basic rules of golf. The basic idea is that you need to hit your next shot where the ball landed from the previous shot. As a golfer you are not allowed to move the ball or change your “lie”. Unless the rulebook says you may. In principle, we all play golf according to the same rules. Whether you are competing in The Open Championship or playing a Sunday round at your local club, it’s the same basic rulebook. There are some local rules for example if the course is soft from too much rain, you may be allowed to clean the mud off the ball. But generally the rules remain the same for everyone. When the idea of rules come up there is an automatic reaction that rules are there to spoil our fun...

WASHINGTON: U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has resigned to the White House after months of strains with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a source close to the situation confirmed. The most recent senior official to resign or be forced out by Hegseth at the Pentagon is Driscoll, who officials say has close connections to the U.S. Vice President JD Vance. His resignation is at a time when the United States is still at war with Iran and thousands of U.S. Army soldiers are stationed throughout the Middle East. More Stories: Uber Introduces Fully Autonomous Baidu Robotaxis in Dubai It was not immediately clear whether the White House had accepted Driscoll’s resignation. The source states that Driscoll had already brought up the issue of Army transformation and military readiness with the administration, and what he considered to be the attempts of Hegseth to prevent such efforts, such as the firing of generals...
