BCP should not implode from within: Botswana still needs a vibrant opposition
The resignation this week of a Botswana Congress Party national spokesperson Mmannana Pheko from the party has naturally brought heightened public glare on the BCP.
That scrutiny is welcome, even as politicians instinctively do not like it.
If Dr Pheko leaves politics altogether, then her departure will be a big loss to a field too often crowded with charlatans.
It is however possible that she might join the ruling UDC, in which case the BCP will have to brace itself for a long spell of possible disintegration at the hands of a ruling party.
It is exactly that situation which has in the past brought the Botswana National Front to the brink at the hands of the Botswana Democratic Party.
And the BDP was ruthless at targeting low hanging fruits from the BNF in particular and the UDC in general.
