Sunday Standard Botswana laws are not protecting the poor  For several years I have been doing work as a columnist, in certain cases I have received feedback when I write about issues affecting certain sectors of government and our economy. Some of these government departments are Botswana Police and Botswana Defence Force.   This time around, I am praying and hoping that the Minister of Investment Trade and Industry reads this article as I am about to bare the deficiencies of his ministry. The point I want to raise here is that trade laws in this country are not meant to protect the poor and the vulnerable ordinary citizens.    .ihc-locker-wrap{} There’s more to this story But to keep reading, we need you to subscribe. *Diamond Company Injects P250 000 For The Tournament Botswana Table Tennis Association (BTTA) has been thrown a lifeline in their preparation for the Africa Youth Championships scheduled for 9th and 14th July in Gaborone. BTTA has received a P250 000 cash injection from Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) to cover logistics for the continental tournament. BTTA was given the green light to host the tournament six months ago, and need any financial assistance they can get to deliver a great table tennis event. Speaking at the sponsorship launch last Monday, ODC Managing Director Mmetla Masire said the gesture underscores their commitment towards supporting sports development in Botswana. “We are excited to invest towards Botswana’s potential to become a prominent hub for international table tennis events. Sunday Standard Botswana’s elections have become heavily securitized It was only a matter of time before the opposition parties, as contenders for power responded in kind to the ever increasing securitization of Botswana’s elections. Last month I got a call from a ruling party functionary who was attending a regional congress in Lobatse. “You have to be here to realise that the high number of security agents present here is a clear demonstration that there is something at stake for those in power,” the ruling party guy said. .ihc-locker-wrap{} There’s more to this story But to keep reading, we need you to subscribe. “Some clauses aimed at Khama and Dow” Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Botswana (UB) Professor Bojosi Otlhogile has punched holes in the Constitutional Review report by Justice Maruping Dibotelo. Otlhogile says the report by the Dibotelo Commission is marred with a lot of flaws, and that despite concerns that the current Constitution already gives the President too much power, the proposed Amendment Bill seems to be advocating for more Presidential powers. Speaking at the University of Botswana Public Lecture organized by the Evangelical Fellowship of Botswana (EFB) on Tuesday evening, he said there is a lot of evidence to prove that the nation did not appreciate what the exercise was about, and what was required from them. He said the Commissioners failed to interrogate the concerns raised during the Kgotla meetings and to apply their professional experience to dissect them and submit some of them to the relevant...

Anglo American, listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange, has announced intentions to divest several assets as part of a turnaround strategy, following the rejection of a $43 billion takeover offer from BHP. The plan includes spinning off its platinum-metals subsidiary Anglo American Platinum, divesting or demerging its diamond unit De Beers, selling its steelmaking coal assets, and considering options for its nickel operation. De Beers, majority owned by Anglo American with an 85 percent controlling stake and 15 percent by the Botswana government, had one of its toughest year in 2023, with Anglo American putting a $1.6 billion write-down of the book value of De Beers. A write-down in book value of a company refers to the reduction of the recorded value of an asset or group of assets on the company’s balance sheet. This reduction typically occurs when the company believes that the asset’s current market value has decreased...
