Molepolole Magistrates’ Court is no stranger to disturbing cases, with murder, rape and violence depressingly common. This week, however, there was a sense of shock in the courtroom when a youth was charged with raping a 94-year-old woman. Kedibonye Mosarwa, 29, is accused of breaking into the elder’s house in the middle of the night, seemingly looking for money from a woman he apparently knew relatively well. It is alleged that after satisfying his greed, the Kotolaname native then satisfied his sexual desires. In a brief interview with The Voice, Lekgwapheng Station Commander, Mothosera Busang, revealed the incident occurred at Tsimane lands just after 2am on Saturday (2nd May) morning. “The elderly woman was sleeping with her three-year-old grandson. The victim woke up sensing someone moving around the house, and when the suspect heard the woman talking, he demanded some money,” explained the superintendent. Mosarwa reportedly told the old woman,...

The United States Department of Justice has filed a civil complaint seeking to revoke the US citizenship of a Nigerian-born man, Emmanuel Oluwatosin Kazeem, convicted of masterminding a large-scale identity theft and tax fraud scheme that allegedly defrauded US authorities of millions of dollars. In a statement published on its website on Monday, the department said the complaint was filed before the US District Court in Baltimore, Maryland, accusing Kazeem of unlawfully obtaining American citizenship through fraud and concealment of criminal conduct. Kazeem was convicted in 2017 on 19 counts of mail fraud, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to commit fraud, and was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment. His sentence was later commuted in 2024 by former US President Joe Biden after he had spent about six years in prison. Announcing the action, Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate said the administration would continue targeting individuals who fraudulently...

Ásia, Deutsche Welle, Inglês - Zambia's media freedom under scrutiny ahead of 2026 election
2026-05-19 03:46:28

While media rights groups acknowledge improvements since President Hakainde Hichilema took office in 2021, they say structural, legal, and economic pressures continue to threaten independent journalism ahead of what is expected to be a highly contested vote.   Concerns over fair political coverage in Zambia Opposition parties and media freedom groups say unequal access to public media remains one of the biggest concerns ahead of the elections. “It has always been like that to a certain extent; it is even worse now,” opposition National Democratic Party leader Saboi Imboela told DW, arguing state-owned media gives more coverage to the ruling party, while opposition voices largely rely on private outlets.   Media analysts warn unequal visibility during elections can undermine public trust and democratic participation. Zambia’s media “more open, but still fragile”...
