By Lincoln G. Peters MAMBA POINT, Monrovia, June 25, 2026 – The Witness Protection Agency (WPA) has formally offered security protection and other support services to Roberts International Airport (RIA) Security Manager for Investigation and Intelligence, Oscar Brown, following his claims that his life has been threatened in connection with the ongoing investigation into the US$19.2 million cocaine seizure at the airport. In a statement dated June 23 and signed by Acting Assistant Manager for Public Affairs Abraham R. Sirleaf, the agency said it was deeply concerned by Brown’s public disclosure that he had received threats linked to the investigation involving the seizure of approximately 237.6 kilograms of cocaine at Roberts International Airport. According to the WPA, Brown recently told the Spoon Talk radio program that while attending a training seminar abroad, he received credible warnings not to return to Liberia because individuals had allegedly been positioned at the airport...

By Lincoln G. Peters SUPREME COURT, Monrovia, June 25, 2026 – Former Finance and Development Planning Minister Samuel D. Tweah Jr. has alleged that the government is pressuring Criminal Court “C” Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie to overturn his recent acquittal in the high-profile US$6 million corruption case after a juror admitted possessing a mobile phone during jury deliberations. In a Facebook post on Thursday, Tweah claimed the government has shifted its focus from the ongoing US$19.2 million drug seizure investigation to efforts aimed at reversing the jury’s not-guilty verdict. According to Tweah, the judge has acknowledged that investigators found no evidence linking him, his co-defendants, or their lawyers to any misconduct involving the jury. He, however, alleged that prosecutors were using the issue of jurors possessing mobile phones during deliberations as a basis to challenge the verdict. “The complaining juror told the investigation that she had a phone, but that...

By Stephen G. Fellajuah ZWEDRU, Grand Gedeh County, June 26, 2026 – Grand Gedeh County is set to become the center of Liberia’s opposition politics this weekend as leaders of several opposition parties descend on Zwedru for the Congress for Democratic Change’s (CDC) 22nd anniversary celebration, amid growing signs of efforts to forge a united front against the ruling Unity Party ahead of the 2029 elections. At the heart of the gathering will be Alternative National Congress (ANC) Political Leader and Standard Bearer Alexander B. Cummings, who has been invited to deliver the keynote address at what the CDC describes as a national political renewal and policy dialogue. By Lincoln G. Peters YARWIN-MEHNSONOH, Nimba County, June 24, 2026 — Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung has warned appointed public officials that their future in government could depend on their ability to help President Joseph Nyuma Boakai secure victory in the 2029 presidential election. Speaking Wednesday during a program in Zeekepa, Yarwin-Mehnsonoh District, Koung urged government officials to positively impact their communities by supporting local residents and strengthening public confidence in the Unity Party-led administration. He cautioned that officials whose conduct discourages voters from supporting President Boakai could lose the opportunity to serve in a future administration. “If the election comes in 2029 and the President wins, he will look at the numbers and where those votes came from,” Koung said. “If you were mean in your community and people refused to vote for the President because of your behavior, you will not get a job. This is not my...

By Stephen G. Fellajuah MONROVIA, June 25, 2026 — Former Finance and Development Planning Minister Samuel D. Tweah Jr. has written to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and other international leaders, alleging that the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is conducting a systematic political witch-hunt against opposition figures. In a letter dated June 22, 2026, Tweah cited his recent acquittal in a high-profile corruption case, claiming the government’s continued efforts to challenge the verdict are politically motivated. Tweah, who served under former President George Weah, was acquitted on May 8 by a 15-member jury in Criminal Court “C” of charges including economic sabotage, theft of property, and money laundering related to an alleged US$6.2 million financial scheme. The jury also acquitted his co-defendant, Moses Cooper, prompting celebrations among supporters of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), while government officials and ruling party supporters questioned the verdict. In his...

By Stephen G. Fellajuah MONROVIA, June 25, 2026 — Former lawmaker David Kortie has dismissed allegations made by former Mines and Energy Minister Wilmot Paye against Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, describing the claims as baseless and intended to damage the Vice President’s reputation and political future. Speaking on Spoon Network’s Spoon Talk program, Paye alleged that Vice President Koung wanted him removed from the Ministry of Mines and Energy because he believed the former minister did not support his reported presidential ambitions for 2029. Paye further claimed that Koung accused him of backing Finance and Development Planning Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan as a potential successor to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai in the 2029 elections or beyond. The former Unity Party chairman also alleged that Vice President Koung and Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah established NIMBO, which he described as a political grouping, arguing that Unity Party members would be mistaken...

June 12, 2026 His Excellency António Guterres Secretary-General of the United Nations United Nations Headquarters 405 East 42nd Street New York, NY 10017 United States of America Your Excellency: Please consider this missive a retrospective on unfolding political developments in Liberia that are fraught with deleterious consequences for the country’s long-term peace, democratic viability and investment credibility. The missive describes a persistent pattern of political witch-hunt targeting key members of the Liberian opposition under the pretext of pursuing anti-corruption and accountability aims.  It details how this political targeting has played out and is playing out against me personally as former Minister of Finance and Development Planning (Finance Minister), and subsequently veers into a broader depiction of extant  degeneration of the rule of law in Liberia, the egregious pattern of executive dismemberment of judicial independence and an opprobrious and well-orchestrated design to silence political dissent. These despotic proclivities, if unchecked, would...
