A widow from Taso Village in Mbarara City South Division is appealing to the government and well-wishers for assistance in repatriating the body of her daughter, who reportedly died under unclear circumstances in China. Syson Karungi, 30, traveled to China in 2023 through a recruitment agency in search of employment opportunities. After struggling to secure stable work, she relocated to Beijing, where she worked as a casual laborer. However, her employment ended in April, leaving her without work for two months. According to her mother, Mable Bamutorana, the family lost contact with Karungi on January 19, 2024, after her known phone numbers became unreachable. Concerned about her whereabouts, the family made several attempts to trace her but received no information. Bamutorana says her fears intensified until March 5, 2026, when she received a phone call from a man who identified himself only as an employee of the Uganda Embassy in...

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Land Reform this week launched an agricultural support program to improve drought preparedness and strengthen climate-resilient farming systems in vulnerable regions. The programme, valued at about US$2.99 million, will be implemented across five regions and will provide farming households with agricultural inputs, training, and water-efficient technologies, Alfred Sikopo, acting executive director of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, said at the launch. Speaking on behalf of Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform Dr Inge Zaamwani, Sikopo said the programme will introduce climate-smart production systems, including solar-powered irrigation, shade-net structures, and hydroponics, to improve productivity under water-scarce conditions. Key interventions include the distribution of seeds, seedlings, fertilizers, fodder inputs, and farming tools, as well as livestock support such as poultry, rabbits, and animal health kits. Training programmes for farmers and extension officers will also be rolled out through Farmer...

By: Kruah Thompson Monrovia, June 12, 2026 – The Government of Liberia still owes ABK Incorporated a balance of Three Million Four Hundred Forty Thousand United States Dollars (US$3,440,000.00), despite having taken delivery of 60 buses and trucks procured for the National Transit Authority (NTA) under a US$3.94 million contract to expand public transportation services nationwide. Contract documents reviewed show that an initial payment of US$500,000 was made at signing, with the remaining balance to be paid in quarterly installments through 2027. On March 19, 2025, the Government of Liberia entered into an agreement with ABK Incorporated shortly after receiving a budgetary allotment from the 2025 National Budget under the Project Special Funds Public Sector Investment Project (PSIP). At the time, the government disclosed that a portion of the Project Special Funds had been used for the initial payment of US$500,000 for 35 TATA mass transit buses (62-seater), 20 minibuses...

…as she designates Macheli as IEC accounting chief …Commission hails move as victory for governance and accountability Moroke Sekoboto THE Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has secured a major victory in its months-long standoff with the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning after Minister, Dr Retšelisitsoe Matlanyane,  finally designated Acting Director of Elections Lydia Macheli as the commission’s Chief Accounting Officer (CAO). The appointment brings to an end a bitter dispute that had threatened to spill into the courts, with the IEC accusing the government of undermining its constitutional independence by refusing to recognise Ms Macheli in the role. IEC chairperson, Dr John Maphephe, announced this week that the commission had received a letter dated 4 June 2026 from Dr Matlanyane formally appointing Ms Macheli as CAO for the 2026/27 financial year. The designation marks a dramatic turnaround from the minister’s earlier position that Ms Macheli was not “fit and proper”...
