Molepolole Magistrates Court is no stranger to disturbing cases, with murder, rape and violence depressingly common; this week, however, there was a sense of shock in the courtroom when a youth was charged with raping a 94-year-old woman.
Kedibonye Mosarwa, 29, is accused of breaking into the elder’s house in the middle of the night, seemingly looking for money from a woman he apparently knew relatively well.
It is alleged that after satisfying his greed, the Kotolaname native then satisfied his sexual desires.
In a brief interview with The Voice, Lekgwapheng Station Commander, Mothosera Busang revealed the incident occurred at Tsimane lands just after 2am on Saturday (2 May) morning.
“The elderly woman was sleeping with her three-year-old grandson.
The victim woke up sensing someone moving around the house and when the suspect heard the woman talking he demanded for some money,” explained the Superintendent.
Mosarwa reportedly told the old woman, who is said to have recognised his voice, he knew she had P100 and demanded she hand over cash.
After searching and pocketing the money, he allegedly ordered her to undress; when she refused, it is reported the suspect ripped her clothes off and raped her in the toddler’s presence.
Afterwards, it is believed he walked straight home in the dark.
The aged victim then hobbled outside to report to one of her children, who stays next door and immediately alerted the neighbours as well as the police.
Spotting footprints in the ground, neighbours are said to have followed the tracks, which reportedly led them to Mosarwa’s place nearby Letlhokwa ward.
Arriving at the same time as the cops, they found the accused rapist inside, fast asleep.
Facing one count of rape, Mosarwa was remanded in custody and is due back in court on 4 June.
