The Nigeria Democratic Congress has dismissed reports claiming that it lacks governorship candidates in 12 states ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the allegation as false and politically motivated. The party, in a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, insisted that it had nominated candidates for all 28 states where governorship elections are expected to be held in 2027. Director said the reports questioning its presence in some states were aimed at undermining what it described as its growing national momentum. He said, “The NDC has been shocked to discover a false story and deliberate propaganda circulating in sections of the media and on social media claiming that the NDC does not have governorship candidates in 12 states ahead of the 2027 general elections. “We state categorically that this claim is false, malicious, a lie from the pit of hell, and intended to mislead...

Ásia, Deutsche Welle, Inglês - How can African retailers compete with Shein and Temu?

A T-shirt for a few dollars, along with jewelry, shoes and accessories — all delivered straight to your door. For many young people in African cities, shopping no longer starts in a store. They scroll through Instagram or TikTok, see influencers showing off their latest purchases, and place an order with just a few clicks. This combination of extremely low prices, a huge selection and aggressive social media marketing has made Chinese company Shein one of the world’s most successful online fashion retailers. Temu, also from China, follows a similar model with an even broader range of products. For Africa’s young, urban consumers, the appeal is obvious. But as more purchasing power flows directly to Asia through these platforms, another question is becoming increasingly important: What happens to local retailers, manufacturers and jobs? South Africa shows the impact South Africa is currently the clearest test case. Shein launched there in...

SHIBUYA (Japan) Sierra Leone Telegraph: 04 September 2026: Ask what Africa needs to secure its economic future, and the answers tend to follow a familiar script: capital, technology and infrastructure. Rarely does ‘data’ make the list. Yet, data sovereignty, the ability to collect, control and act on reliable information about one’s own economy, has become one of the most consequential forms of sovereignty a nation can exercise. It is the invisible foundation on which every effective policy, efficient tax system and well-designed social programme ultimately rests. Without data and its valuable insights, even the best-funded interventions operate in the dark, and African governments remain dependent on analysis produced elsewhere, by others, for other purposes. Across the continent, a paradox persists. Governments collect vast amounts of tax administrative data, records of income, transactions, compliance and economic activity. This data, in the right hands and under the right conditions, has the potential...
