The hospitality industry is counting losses due restrictions imposed following the outbreak of the Bundibugyo Ebola strain in the DRC. The players in the sector blame the losses on  misinformation and the ill-advised travel advisories. For Uganda, for example, most of the tourists come from the US, Canada and Europe, countries and regional which have announced a wide range of restrictions to travelers. These have seen prospective travelers to Uganda cancel their trips, either out of fear, airline flight cancellations or inhibitive measures like quarantines, among others. Jean Byamugisha, the Chief Executive Officer at Uganda Hotel Owners Association says the restrictions are uncalled-for. She wondered why Uganda out of all the countries neighbouring the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been subjected to all levels of travel advisories. The travel advisories saw airlines like KLM, a major operator at Entebbe, suspend flights following a decline in travel demand, though it did not...

By Lincoln G. Peters Guinea, June 12, 2026 – The recent visit of embattled Montserrado County District #10 Representative Yekeh Y. Kolubah to the Republic of Guinea has sparked widespread fear and speculation in Liberia. The anxiety stems from the secretive nature and unclear purpose of his trip, which comes shortly after his expulsion from the House of Representatives for making provocative statements regarding the ongoing Liberia-Guinea border dispute. Many Liberians are voicing concerns that Kolubah’s undisclosed visit could signal the planning of a coup d’état or rebellion. They are urging the government to monitor the situation closely and pursue diplomatic engagement with Guinean authorities. Others, however, argue that a single lawmaker lacks the capacity to ignite conflict in Liberia, and maintain that the Liberian people, weary from years of war, would not support such an initiative. On Thursday, June 11, 2026, Kolubah appeared in a live video on his...

…as Tikoe substation contract award is questioned Moorosi Tsiane CONTROVERSIAL Ministry of Energy Principal Secretary, Tankiso Phapano, has once again found himself at the centre of a major procurement controversy following the awarding of a M55 million contract to upgrade the Ha-Tikoe Substation. The controversy has been compounded by allegations that Mr Phapano lacked the legal authority to issue the award letter, with sources insisting that only the Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) Managing Director or the designated project manager could formally award the contract. The project, valued at M55,065,019.19, was awarded to Chinese firm, Jiangsu Etern, despite objections from stakeholders and now suspended LEC Managing Director, Mohlomi Seitlheko, who maintained that both the World Bank and the project’s Steering Committee had suspended the project pending the completion of the Ha Belo Substation. Ha Belo works are yet to be completed. The Ha-Tikoe project seeks to increase the substation’s capacity from...

They survive as little more than names in the royal grants that endowed a sultan’s tomb. Now, reading the seventeenth-century account of François Pyrard de Laval – the Frenchman shipwrecked at the court of King Kalaafaan – Nazim Sattar reconstructs the king’s queens: the high-born chief queen taken by force, the child pulled from a wreck at Guraidhoo, and the young woman seized barely three months before the disaster of 1607. A weekend read on the women history left in the margins. https://maldivesindependent.com/history/shadows-beside-the-king-the-queens-of-kalaafaan-584b Facebook
