AP —  A Syrian court sentenced ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad along with his younger brother to death in absentia on Tuesday for crimes against humanity and war crimes during Syria’s 14-year conflict that left about half a million people dead. The sentences at the Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus are the first against Assad or members of his inner circle since the Assad family’s five decades in power came to an end 20 months ago. “Bashar Assad used state agencies to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity,” said judge Fakhareddine al-Aryan during a court session that was aired live on state TV. Also sentenced to death in the same case was Assad’s maternal cousin Atef Najib, who was convicted of overseeing a crackdown in the southern province of Daraa that led to the uprising and later the civil war. Amid tight security, Najib stood inside a cage wearing a...

Sunday Standard Botswana’s foreign service is now hollowed by years of overuse of political appointments Over the recent past too many wrong people have gotten appointed as High Commissioners and Ambassadors. Such misplaced appointments have been going on for a very long time – with despicable consequences. The appointments are a result of subordinating strategic foreign policy interests to partisan and political patronage by those in charge. Quite predictably, these wrongful appointments have weakened the foreign service and over time rendered it unfit for purpose. Membership of the party in power has often mattered more than appropriate qualifications and experience in diplomacy. .ihc-locker-wrap{} There’s more to this story But to keep reading, we need you to subscribe. Man denied bail in botched robbery that left one dead A terrifying armed robbery at a home in Gaborone’s Block 8 location on Sunday evening has left a suspect dead, another behind bars and two more on the run. The only individual arrested in connection with the botched burglary, Phenyo Kgosipula, 30, appeared before Village Magistrates Court on Thursday, and was remanded in custody after coming face-to-face with the Chinese complainant. Reportedly armed with a pistol, the Gabane native and three others allegedly attempted to rob 60-year-old Xiaolin Zheng at his residence. However, it seems the businessman saw them coming; in the deadly commotion that followed, one of the alleged thieves was shot, later succumbing to his wounds. Opposing bail, the prosecution told court investigations were still at a critical stage, with police hunting for the remaining two suspects. The state also submitted that the complainant fears for his safety...

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has congratulated the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, on his 58th birthday. Otu expressed confidence that Yilwatda’s leadership would position the ruling party for greater electoral success ahead of the 2027 general elections. The governor stated this in a goodwill message signed by his Chief of Staff, Emmanuel Ironbar, on Tuesday to mark Yilwatda’s birthday. He described the APC chairman as an experienced administrator and politician whose wealth of experience would be valuable to the party. He commended Yilwatda for his efforts to strengthen the APC and promote unity among its members, stressing the need for cohesive leadership to consolidate the party’s structures and expand its political base across the country. Otu said Yilwatda’s background in academia, electoral administration, public service and politics had equipped him with the experience required to lead the party at a critical period...

Ásia, Deutsche Welle, Inglês - Over 2,000 dead in DR Congo as virus gathers pace
2026-08-11 18:15:41
Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) said on Tuesday that an outbreak of a particularly virulent strain of the Bundibugyo Ebola virus currently raging in the east and northeast of the country has killed more than 2,000 people since the first case was confirmed. In all, more than 4,380 infections have been recorded. The current outbreak is the 17th ever recorded in the DRC, with Sania Nishtar of the Gavi global vaccine alliance warning it could become “the largest outbreak ever.” Until now, the worst outbreak recorded in the DRC was the one that took place from 2018 to 2020 when some 3,500 infections led to 2,300 deaths. The pace of death is gathering momentum this time around, with the virus spreading faster and exhibiting a higher mortality rate than the 2014-2016 West African outbreak — the worst outbreak on record, which logged 28,000 infections and more than 11,000 deaths....
