For more than a decade, Dr. Yakama Manty Jones and the Yak Jones Foundation have been working to make reading and learning more accessible and enjoyable for children in Sierra Leone. The Foundation, launched in 2016, has supported schools and early childhood centres with books and learning materials, worked with teachers and learning coaches, organised reading activities and helped children prepare for examinations. At a major international equestrian event at the end of August, Namibian riders excelled by taking the laurels in four of the five 120 km rides. The event was the 2026 Desert Challenge and FEI Group IX Endurance Regional Championship at Henties Bay where 125 riders from seven countries competed for the top spots. Namibia fielded 87 riders. Melieke Steyl on Lormar Fascination claimed the 120 km Child Rider title while Vune Robberts on Hurst Rudan was the Young Rider Champion. Colin Makondo on El Shakir Gustavo took the Standard Weight title and George Wessels on Kalharabi Sniper took the Heavy Weight title. Mr Makhabane walked into Life-Line Pharmaceutical Wholesalers and Distributors (Pty) Ltd in Maseru on 14 March 2026 seeking medical assistance, but never walked out. What was reportedly meant to be a routine visit for medication and wound dressing allegedly turned into a fatal medical ordeal after an employee, Thabang Tloome, allegedly performed an unauthorised surgery to remove a lump from Mr Makhabane’s armpit. Mr Makhabane, who was battling skin cancer, allegedly received an overdose of the anaesthetic ketamine during the procedure and subsequently died.
