The Prime Minister, Dr Elijah Ngurare, has placed strategic energy preparedness and fuel storage expansion at the core of Namibia’s national security agenda, cautioning that true national sovereignty depends on resource self-reliance.
The Prime Minister delivered the remarks during a Performance Management Review briefing presented to the Office of the Prime Minister by the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy, led by Deputy Minister Hon. Modestus Amutse.
Ngurare emphasized that long-term national resilience requires robust state capacity to deliver essential utilities, specifically power and water, without vulnerability to foreign market shocks.
“We must have energy security,” Ngurare stated, urging policymakers to adopt forward-looking frameworks capable of insulating the domestic economy against geopolitical instability and supply chain disruptions.
A central point of the briefing focused on expanding national oil reserves. The Premier called for an immediate assessment of national strategic petroleum storage infrastructure, urging the exploration of additional storage facilities at key strategic locations across the country.
“How ready are we in terms of strategic storage?” Ngurare asked, emphasizing that infrastructural preparedness must be established well ahead of potential global or regional crises.
The Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy is expected to review current storage capacities and formulate strategic expansion plans to align with the government’s broader national resilience framework.
