Mark Maloney and Dane Skeete shared the honours at the Barbados Rally Club’s Double-Header Summer Sprint on August 23, each recording the fastest time in one direction.

Maloney defeated Dane Skeete by eight-tenths of a second in the first run from Kendal in St John to Ellesmere in St George, but Skeete pipped Maloney to the post by just eight-hundredths in the reverse run.

Forty-six cars contested the seventh and eighth rounds of the BRC Driver’s & Class Championship, while producing some standout performances. Among them was top two-wheel-drive finisher Mark-Anthony Hinkson, who finished inside the top 10 in both directions.

Before the competition began, a minute’s silence was observed in the service area at Colleton Plantation Yard, St John, in memory of Dave Crawford, former Motoring Club Barbados Inc chairman Glyne Greaves and Harold ‘Doc’ Morley, who died in recent weeks.

At the finish, Maloney said: “I know I have the ability and I just have to make sure my head is clear. I know it’s not luck. Unfortunately Stuart (Maloney) had power steering issues in the morning, as I’m sure he would have been much closer but the day was impeccable for me.”

Satellite imagery shows yellow-tinted mine drainage spreading from North Korea’s Bupo mine toward farmland and a saltworks in South Hwanghae province’s Kangnyong county, with the contaminated runoff reaching waterways connected to Kangnyong Bay and raising concerns it could eventually leak into the Yellow Sea. The mine’s drainage flows toward the Bupo reservoir and nearby farmland, likely affecting soil and water quality along the way. If the runoff reaches the Bupo saltworks, it could also disrupt salt production there. Of particular note, the tidal flat waterways near the mine connect to Kangnyong Bay through drainage sluice gates on the coastal embankment, raising the likelihood that the mine’s drainage is reaching the sea. Pollutants that flow into the Yellow Sea through Kangnyong Bay could spread to surrounding waters under the influence of tides and coastal currents.
