– Advertisement – St. Kitts and Nevis – The Department of Sports unequivocally rejects the circulation of fabricated claims suggesting that athletes or SKN Athletics were denied access to the Kim Collins Athletics Stadium. All national sporting facilities fall under the management and supervision of the Department of Sports, and the procedures governing their use remain consistent, transparent, and well-established. Event promoters are required to submit written requests for access to facilities at least two weeks in advance. Upon approval, an official permission letter is issued when applying to host an event. Prior to the day of any activity there is constant communication between the Department of Sports and Event promoter. At no time did SKN Athletics request or receive permission from the Department of Sports to host the event in question. To ensure clarity, the Department acknowledges receipt of the SKN Athletics-proposed calendar for the period. While the Department...

File photo: Sir Ronald Sanders. – Advertisement – By Sir Ronald Sanders The Caribbean is living through a moment of rising geopolitical tension. As the United States intensifies pressure on the Maduro government in Venezuela, the ripples reach CARICOM shores fast. None of these countries chose this confrontation, yet each of them is forced to navigate its consequences. This is nothing new. Small states always live at the edge of power. But recent events have exposed, with painful clarity, how thin the shield of individual sovereignty becomes when the pressure of great-power politics mounts. Community Tested by High Politics CARICOM has long described itself as a “Community of Sovereign States.” It is a noble phrase, suggesting unity grounded in mutual cooperation. Yet this crisis has shown how fragile that unity becomes when confronted with high politics—especially politics involving the United States, a country on which many CARICOM economies depend. In...

– Advertisement – Saint Lucia – Over seventy residents in Saint Lucia have been successfully trained in the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) Project’s* Fer-de-Lance Safe Handling Workshop series. The workshop series is part of activities to promote human safety and species survival, while laying the groundwork for research on the potential pharmacological benefits of its venom. The workshop participants were allowed to share their snake encounter experiences, as well as opinions on coexistence for...

– Advertisement – Saint Lucia – The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs informs the public that we are in the midst of the flu season, which spans from October to March. This is a period during which infections by respiratory viruses tend to increase. As we enter this high-risk season, the Ministry is urging all residents to take proactive steps to protect themselves and others from respiratory illnesses. As an island, Saint Lucia is particularly sensitive to viruses circulating internationally. The continuous movement of people across borders means that respiratory illnesses present globally can quickly reach our shores. Because of this, the Ministry of Health remains vigilant in monitoring circulating respiratory viruses to guide our preparedness and response measures. So far, global reports indicate low activity of the COVID-19 virus, but increasing circulation of the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and the seasonal influenza virus, specifically influenza A subtype H3N2....

– Advertisement – Saint Lucia – On December 1st, we commemorate the 37th observance of World AIDS Day and join the global community in reflecting on the theme “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response.” This theme calls on us to acknowledge the challenges that persist while recommitting to bold, transformative action to end AIDS as a public health threat. Globally, in 2024, an estimated 40.8 million people were living with HIV. There were 1.3 million new infections and 630,000 deaths due to AIDS-related illnesses. While AIDS-related deaths have declined by 54% since 2010, the reality remains sobering: in 2024, someone died every minute from HIV-related causes, including 75,000 children. Yet, hope remains strong as 31.6 million people worldwide accessed life-saving antiretroviral therapy. Here in Saint Lucia, we continue to strengthen our national response. In 2024, 35 new HIV infections were recorded, and to date in 2025, 17 new cases have been documented—figures...
