CAPITOL HILL, June 5, 2026 — The House of Representatives has passed a vote of no confidence in Ambassador-at-Large Sheikh Moustapha Kouyateh over remarks he allegedly made against the Legislature.
The decision was taken on Thursday, June 4, following a complaint by Grand Bassa County District #2 Representative Clarence Banks, who accused the ambassador of refusing to withdraw comments he made about the House.
In his communication, Rep. Banks said he encountered Ambassador Kouyateh on May 31 at OK FM, where both men were scheduled to appear on separate segments of the station’s morning program.
Banks said that while they were in the station’s guest waiting area, he asked Kouyateh about his appearance on the program. He alleged that the ambassador responded that he had not apologized and would not apologize for statements he had made on social media about the House of Representatives.
Rep. Banks said the statement was made in the presence of several OK FM employees and guests. He described the remarks as disgraceful and shameful, and said they undermined the cordial working relationship expected between the Executive and Legislative branches of government.
After a lengthy floor debate, Sinoe County Electoral District #1 Representative Thomas Romeo Quioh moved that the House formally declare its lack of confidence in Ambassador Kouyateh. The motion received overwhelming support and was passed by 36 members in session.
The House has meanwhile communicated its decision to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, informing him that members can no longer work with Ambassador Kouyateh in his current capacity because of what they called his continued disrespect and disregard for the Legislature.
