AN update on the management of Saladero Farm and the National Stud Flock in the Falkland Islands has been presented to the Agricultural Advisory Committee. It outlines its contribution to the agricultural economy alongside current operational challenges.
The paper authored by the Head of Agriculture notes that Saladero remains the Department of Agriculture’s principal base for genetic improvement, on-farm research and industry demonstration.
A return on investment analysis presented to the Committee estimated that genetic improvement increased wool value by £27.98 million between 2016 and 2025, equating to around £62 gained for every £1 spent.
Head of Agriculture Matt Davies noted in the meeting that on average Saladero worked out at £45,000 a year to run. Asked if he felt it was good value for money compared to the private sector, he believed it was, “if you look at what Saladero and the national stud flock has delivered to the Falklands over the years…”
Challenges: The paper from Mr Davies highlighted a number of operational challenges, including deferred maintenance affecting key infrastructure such as the shearing shed, workers’ accommodation and fencing.
Issues with the breeding programme during 2025/26 were also noted, linked to maintenance and staffing pressures.
The Department reported that repairs and upgrades are underway, including a programme of fencing work and planned building improvements in collaboration with the Public Works Department.
Changes to management arrangements were also outlined.
An outsourced management model, introduced in 2022/23 due to recruitment difficulties, has proven more costly and less able to provide the level of day-to-day oversight now required.
The contract has since ended by mutual agreement, and an interim manager, Tex Alazia, has been appointed.
The Department of Agriculture will bring forward proposals to Executive Council on future management options, with a preference for appointing a permanent full-time manager while retaining flexibility depending on recruitment.
