Dr Laurie Marker, Founder and Executive Director of the Otjiwarongo-based Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), presented Namibia’s rangeland management and wildlife coexistence models as a global solution to desertification at the 17th United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17). The international summit was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from 17–28 August, under the theme “Restoring Land. Restoring Hope.” Gathering world leaders, scientists, and agricultural experts, the conference addressed escalating global drought issues. Dr. Marker used the summit as an international platform to advocate for Namibia’s integrated approach to keeping wildlife on working agricultural landscapes. “We can’t manage land, water, food production, livestock, wildlife, biodiversity, and people as separate systems,” Dr. Marker stated. “They’re all part of the same living ecosystem. Namibia has shown when we keep the land healthy, rural communities and wildlife thrive together.” During the summit, the CCF introduced its flagship initiative, “Saving the Cheetah, Saving the Drylands,” positioning...

Tim Cook has formally resigned as the CEO of Apple after 15 years in the top position, and an influential era in the history of the company has come to an end with John Ternus replacing him as the chief executive on September 1. Cook will continue to be closely engaged with Apple as executive chairman, which will offer continuity to the company as it enters a new leadership phase. The deal also provides Ternus with the experience of Cook and gives Apple the opportunity to take a new direction with a new CEO. Read this: Lebanon’s President Asks Greece For Help in Deal With Israel The tenure of Cook changed Apple in a manner that was far much more than the launch of individual products. When he became CEO in 2011, Apple was already one of the world’s most valuable technology companies. Its global presence, services business and market...

…as 100 families are set to benefit from solar-hybrid project Seithati Motšoeneng SEMONKONG residents have welcomed a major government intervention aimed at addressing the town’s chronic electricity problems, after Prime Minister Sam Matekane launched a M78 million hybrid solar power project on Friday. For years, the mountain community has endured erratic electricity supplies, with power often cut at 10pm and restored only at 8am. At times, the town has gone for days without electricity, crippling businesses and disrupting essential services. The new project, supported by the World Bank, will combine a refurbished mini-hydropower plant with solar generation, battery storage and a standby diesel generator to ensure a more reliable electricity supply. Speaking at the launch, Mr Matekane said Semonkong had been declared a town many years ago, and that a 220-kilowatt hydropower station was constructed there in 1990. He said the facility had since deteriorated and was no longer capable...

It has been a long, long time since I last wrote in this space, yet throughout my extended absence, Saleh has graciously kept my column alive. It is indeed a generous gesture to preserve a columnist’s place when the writer himself has been silent for so long. I deeply appreciate that he kept my place, allowing me to return when I was ready to write again. I come back, however, without pretending to have followed every development in our country during my absence and without the illusion that I have found ready answers to the problems that have been plaguing our people for so long. I return simply as someone who has spent much of his adult life thinking and writing about Eritrea. The September 1 anniversary seemed an appropriate time for my return given its significance as both a milestone and a reminder of the pioneers who took the...
