Ibrahim Mohammed, 32, had spent years deep in the vast forests of Nigeria’s northeastern Borno State as a jihadist fighter when a video message from his mother changed everything. A 2009 uprising by the Boko Haram group triggered Nigeria’s ongoing insurgency, which has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than 3 million. “I received a video message from my mother. She pleaded with me to leave the group, lay down my arms, and return home,” Mohammed told AFP on Friday at a ceremony to mark the end of a rehabilitation programme for former jihadist fighters in Borno’s capital, Maiduguri, the epicentre of the 17-year-long insurgency. “It touched me deeply. I realised that my family still cared about me and wanted me back. That was when I decided to leave the bush and surrender.” Mohammed was among about 720 former fighters who recently completed a state government rehabilitation programme,...

New Parliament Chambers works have entered into the final phase as contractor completes steel works and embarks on roofing . Construction of the new parliament chambers is being undertaken by Roko Construction Ltd. The works are expected to be complete by end of next year. However, the steel works, the most sophisticated aspect of the contract, were sub-contracted to an Irish firm, Kelly Steel, a world wide reputable firm in bent steel frames. “We visited the new Parliament building which is taking shape beautifully! Impressive to see the unique expertise and craftsmanship from Kelly Steel and Roko Uganda , both owned by Irish diaspora. 3000 tonnes of bent steel frames from Kelly Steel shaped this landmark building,,” a tweet from the Irish Embassy in Kampala noted. Officials from the Irish Embassy in Kampala visited the new chambers this week to acquaint themselves with the ongoing works. Run by Carlow native...

Five years since violent protests shattered Eswatini’s calm, King Mswati III has done nothing to address the causes. In April this year, King Mswati III of Eswatini lavishly celebrated his ruby jubilee, marking 40 years on the throne of sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute monarchy. Millions of emalangeni were spent on a big party at the plush new Ezulwini Palazzo Hotel. Several Southern African presidents and ex-presidents attended, as did Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te (Eswatini is the last African country to recognise Taiwan, rather than China). Keep up with the latest headlines on WhatsApp | LinkedIn Many businesses, including state-owned enterprises, gave the king generous gifts. Bheki Makhubu, editor of the independent magazine The Nation, told ISS Today, a little wryly perhaps, that: ‘Eswatini is peaceful and quiet; the king just celebrated 40 years on the throne and opened a hotel of Las Vegas standards.’ On the surface, the king appeared...
