US President Donald Trump says he will consider requests from families of victims of the September 11 attacks to release additional records that could shed light on allegations about possible Saudi links to the 2001 plot.
The renewed calls come as relatives continue a long-running legal effort seeking greater disclosure around people they allege may have helped the hijackers. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were Saudi nationals, although the Saudi government has consistently denied involvement in the attacks.
Trump, speaking as he prepared to return to Washington from Ireland, said he would review the families’ request. The issue has remained deeply sensitive for relatives of those killed, some of whom argue that successive US administrations have withheld material that could clarify unanswered questions about the attack network.
Terry Strada, national chair of 9/11 Families United and whose husband was killed in the attacks, renewed pressure for further disclosure during events marking the 25th anniversary of September 11.
