365 The highly anticipated UWI Cave Hill Law Week culminated in the prestigious Law Society Legal Regal Gala, held on Thursday night at the Savannah Beach Hotel.  Under the theme Masquerade Night, the gala brought a night of elegance and celebration to the faculty’s annual calendar. The Legal Regal Gala is a signature networking and dinner event organised by the student-led Law Society executive in collaboration with the Faculty of Law. This year, the guest of honour was Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre. Other distinguished guests included the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr Antonius R. The city’s promises about active transportation and safe, walkable neighbourhoods ring hollow when parents are told their children cannot safely walk a few hundred metres to school. This came front and centre earlier this year when the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority’s new “Community Hazard Zone” designation formally recognized what residents have been reluctant to admit to until recently: our neighbourhood has been abandoned. Children who should be walking to Devonshire Community Public School, Cambridge Street Community Public School, and St. Anthony Elementary School are now being offered bus service because the neighbourhood is deemed a risk to “student security and peace of mind,” a devastating admission. It means the failure of municipal and provincial systems – policing, bylaw enforcement, public maintenance and outreach, alongside health and housing – has been translated into a policy that changes how children move through their own community. De 44-jarige winkelier N.A. heeft woensdag op klaarlichte dag aan de Nieuw Weergevondenweg in Suriname een poging tot roofoverval verijdeld door een waarschuwingsschot te lossen. Door het kordate optreden van de ondernemer mislukte de overval en sloegen de daders zonder buit op de vlucht. Vernomen wordt dat zes verdachten de winkel betraden, terwijl een van hen in het voertuig achterbleef om na de daad snel weg te rijden. Een van de daders was gewapend met een mes. De groep arriveerde in een donkerblauwe Toyota Noah. Bij binnenkomst eiste een van hen geld van de Surinaamse ondernemer met de woorden: “Giem alla moni”. De winkelier reageerde alert en loste een waarschuwingsschot in een veilige richting. Hierop zagen de verdachten af van hun daad en vluchtten zij in het voertuig waarin zij waren gekomen. De winkelier is in het bezit van een geldige vuurwapenvergunning. Niemand raakte gewond en er is niets buitgemaakt....
