The Budapest administration and the unions representing municipal council employees have reached a wage agreement, Gergely Karacsony, the city’s mayor, said in a post on Facebook on Friday.
The implementation of the agreement will now depend on the government delivering on its promise to “pay the city what it owes” and for the municipal assembly to approve next year’s budget, Karácsony said.
Employees of Budapest-run companies will see their gross wages rise by 8.6% on average, assuming a 3.6% inflation rate as projected by the government, the mayor said.
“Budapest is committed to respecting its workers, and it won’t compromise on this,” Karacsony said.
“The wage agreement is a reflection of that commitment,” the mayor added.
