The Cambodian and Chinese governments have signed a formal agreement on this year’s Special Fund for Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Projects. The agreement will deliver approximately $1.98 million to support the implementation of seven development projects in Cambodia.
The agreement was signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn and Chinese ambassador Wang Wenbin on June 4.
The seven projects include:
- A mushroom farmer enterprise project aimed at reducing poverty in Kandal Province.
- Phase II of a project integrating rural economic diversification and clean water distribution for communities.
- Expanding regional market access through innovative packaging solutions in Lancang-Mekong countries.
- A hepatitis elimination project.
- Digitalising Lancang-Mekong community tourism to better prepare for Chinese visitors.
- Strengthening green technology and digital transformation capacities for engineers in the Greater Mekong Subregion.
- A China-Cambodia project to enhance water data management capacity and promote regional dialogue under the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation framework.
The foreign ministry explained that the projects would contribute to the country’s national development priorities in areas including poverty reduction, rural development, healthcare, tourism and digital transformation.
Wang noted that under the Lancang-Mekong framework cooperation projects, China and Cambodia have now launched 113 projects, covering sectors such as poverty alleviation, education, healthcare, agriculture, green development and digital transformation.
He said the projects demonstrate the spirit of friendship among Lancang-Mekong countries under the slogan: “Drinking from the same river, sharing a common destiny”.
In a June 4 social media post, the ambassador wrote that over the past decade, the six Lancang-Mekong countries have achieved significant results through joint efforts, transforming the cooperation mechanism into a “golden platform” for regional collaboration.
“China is ready to work with Cambodia and other Mekong countries to jointly usher in a new ‘golden decade’ of Lancang-Mekong cooperation, bringing greater benefits to the people of all six countries,” he said.
“We welcome more friends to join the cause of Lancang-Mekong cooperation,” he added.
Since 2017, Cambodia has received funding support for 113 projects under the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund. Cambodian officials note that the successful implementation of these initiatives reflects the commitment of both Cambodia and China to building a shared community of peace, prosperity and sustainable development for all Lancang-Mekong countries.
