The 2025/2026 Bank Windhoek Triennial has officially closed its nationwide submission process and has transitioned into the judging phase. Organised by the National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN) in partnership with Bank Windhoek, the prestigious competition stands as one of the country’s premier platforms for local visual artists. The final selection of works will be kept under wraps until the official exhibition unveiling, scheduled to open to the public this August. NAGN Chief Curator Ndeenda Shivute-Nakapunda said the response to this year’s competition has been strong, particularly following a six-year hiatus. More than 200 submissions have already been received, with the total expected to increase once artwork collection across the country is complete. “Our activation initiatives helped motivate and support artists across the country, regardless of discipline or experience level, throughout the preparation process,” said Shivute-Nakapunda. “This next phase focuses on judging the submissions to ensure they meet professional and...

The Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) has launched a series of roundtable discussions across the country’s mining regions to strengthen engagement between national leadership and regional membership on issues shaping the daily realities of mineworkers. The engagements also form part of the union’s 40-year anniversary celebrations. The first roundtable, hosted by the Namibia Miners Investment Trust (NAMIT) and NAM-MIC Holdings, was recently convened in Swakopmund under the theme “From the Shaft to the Chamber: Workers’ Voices, National Choices.” The engagement gathered union leadership, members and key stakeholders for discussions on the union’s historical milestone, financial performance and member benefit programmes. Over the past four decades, the union has transitioned from a primarily defensive labour organisation into an institution actively engaged in economic empowerment. The union said this transformation is reflected in its investment instruments, namely NAMIT, NAMITVEST and NAM-MIC, which are valued at over N$700 million. Through these entities, the...

The Southern Africa Tourism Alliance (SATA), led the discussions on why, Johannesburg to Mumbai and Brussels to Cape Town, two of Sub-Saharan Africa’s strongest unserved routes, still have no direct flight, at AviaDev Africa 2026 in Gabarones. The Alliance said according to the Airbus Exploring the Horizon study, they appear among the high demand corridors where passengers continue to route through a third city because no carrier has yet launched a service. “Some of the continent’s connectivity gaps have narrowed over the past year. Qantas added Perth to Johannesburg, Edelweiss introduced their A350 service to Windhoek, Air Congo announced a Brussels link to Kinshasa and Ethiopian secured approval to serve Mauritius. If those routes can move from proposal to operations, why do others with similarly strong demand remain unserved?” They added that during the discussion the panel agreed that none of the stakeholders can make a route work alone, airports...

The roads saw a slight drop in traffic accidents last week, though officials warn that road safety remains one of the nation’s most urgent crises after eight people lost their lives in a span of just seven days. According to data released by the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund on Wednesday, the country recorded 45 crashes, 84 injuries, and 8 fatalities between 15 June and 21 June. MVA spokesperson John Haufiku noted in a statement that while these weekly figures show an improvement compared to previous years, the sudden loss of eight lives serves as a grim reminder of the dangers still facing local motorists. The latest weekly data contributes to a heavy toll since the start of the year. From 1 January to 21 June 21, the roads have claimed 229 lives and left 2,273 people injured across a total of 1,333 recorded crashes. “Compared with the same period...
