A new sectoral agreement covering more than 1,500 Allied Health professionals across 16 professions was signed between the government and the UHM Voice of the Workers, introducing improved working conditions, career progression opportunities and enhanced training programmes, a government statement said.
The Ministry for Health and Active Ageing and UHM Voice of the Workers signed a new sectoral agreement for Allied Health professionals, with Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela, Principal Permanent Secretary Joyce Cassar and Permanent Secretary for Health and Active Ageing Renzo De Gabriele present for the signing.
The government reached the agreement with UHM following several months of constructive and cordial negotiations.
The statement said that the agreement provides improved working conditions for professionals, including a package of enhanced allowances, opportunities for career advancement, an expanded training programme and new opportunities for progression within the professional structure, while continuing to ensure a continuous and high-quality service for patients.
The agreement also recognised the work carried out by these professionals and strengthens career paths, particularly for those wishing to continue working within the clinical aspect of their respective profession, the statement said.
Abela said the agreement was further proof of the government’s commitment towards continued and strong investment in human resources.
“Today we witnessed an important step for hundreds of professionals in the Allied Health sector. Government remains committed to continuing to invest in our professionals, who are so crucial in the care provided to Maltese and Gozitan patients,” Abela said.
UHM’s Chief Executive Officer Josef Vella, as the person who led the negotiations, said he was pleased that UHM Voice of the Workers had signed what “a historic sectoral agreement” for Allied Health professionals, recognising their work with patients.
“The agreement signed today is historic because it ensures that the clinical stream leads to full career progression for these professionals. I look forward to seeing these improvements continue to be reflected in a service of excellence for our patients,” Vella said.
