President Yoweri Museveni has defended the government’s enforcement of the Trade Order and environmental protection measures, urging political leaders to stop what he described as “cheap politics” that encourages disorder and environmental destruction. Speaking during the presentation of the FY2026/27 national budget at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on Thursday, Museveni used analogies from the human body to argue that every public space has a designated purpose and should be used accordingly.  His remarks come months after the controversial implementation of the Trade Order, which sought to remove roadside vendors and informal traders from streets and public spaces across major towns and cities. The directive sparked public debate, with critics arguing that it threatened the livelihoods of thousands of urban poor while supporters insisted it was necessary to restore order and improve the business environment. The policy was temporarily suspended following public outcry and political pressure from several leaders who called for...

Fresh from another May Day assault, pro-democracy activists and organised labour look set to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the 2021 massacre. Despite a huge fan base, from Southern Africa to Taiwan and the United States, Mswati’s record on human rights is anything but exemplary. Fingers point at the king and his government for the many cases of bullying and mysterious deaths, including those of Maseko, Thabani Nkomonye and Sipho Jele, who died in custody, and the targeting of groups such as the LGBTI+ community. King Mswati III is basking in infrastructure development as he marks 40 years on the throne in eSwatini, a landlocked kingdom of 1.5 million people. Cheers are flowing in. Blue chips, from Standard Bank to Nedbank, and the region’s top brass, are singing the king’s praises. Dejected activists, some of who now live in exile, look on helplessly, struggling to re-claim the discourse even as...

By Lincoln G. Peters Monrovia, June 12, 2026: The Interim President of the United Methodist University (UMU), Cllr. Medina A. Wesseh has announced new measures to combat academic fraud, unveiling a QR code security feature on UMU degrees. Wesseh said the new security feature follows several complaints about academic fraud, including incidents of individuals faking UMU degrees and claiming to be graduates. The first batch of QR code-enabled degrees was issued during the university’s 21st convocation and commencement exercises in March, when 612 students graduated from UMU. The new degrees will feature a QR code, which, when scanned, directs users to the UMU system where the graduate’s full name, department, chairperson, university president, and year of graduation are displayed for verification. ” The degree that we will be giving out come June 15, for this end of graduation exercise, will have some special security features that we hope that once...

Mr Tšoele served as Ministry of Local Government PS from January to May this year before being transferred to the Ministry of Defence and National Security after fallout with former Minister Lebona Lephema.
