The interim deal between the US and Iran would extend the ceasefire, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and pave the way for more talks on Iran’s nuclear program, a diplomat briefed on the matter told CNN. The diplomat said the two sides had agreed on the text of the memorandum of understanding, as it is known, but that it is yet to receive final signoff. Here are some key points in the agreement, according to the diplomat: A 60-day ceasefire “on all fronts,” including Lebanon, will begin upon signing. The Strait of Hormuz will be reopened immediately, without Iran levying any fees for passage. It ensures the free flow of energy and commercial goods. Traffic through the waterway would return to prewar levels after 30 days of signing. The US blockade of Iranian ports will be lifted and there would be some sanctions relief “based on the progression of the...

Sunday Standard AU at 63: Ideology Trumps Reality Last week, the AU celebrated its founding in 1963. And it is very natural to celebrate. However, it is also not unfair to pause and ask what the organization has achieved in its sixty-three years of existence. What has it achieved in as far as promoting liberty, freedom, and economic prosperity is concerned? And the verdict for the AU in these realms is damning. .ihc-locker-wrap{} There’s more to this story But to keep reading, we need you to subscribe. Closing in on three years since the fatal shooting that rocked the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) community, the murder case against Captain Mogomotsi Sepopa remains stuck at pre-trial stage, suffering another frustrating delay this week. Currently free on bail, the 37-year-old is accused of murdering his wife, Bogolo Sepopa, and fellow female soldier, Same Moapare in cold blood at Village Garrison in July 2023. The high-profile matter is yet to proceed to trial as neither the prosecution or the defence have completed the procedures required under Order 68 of the High Court Rules. When the matter came before Justice Matlhogonolo Phuthego on Wednesday, State prosecutor Gopolang Tlhabologang admitted both parties were still to comply with the pre-trial requirements. However, he revealed they have agreed to complete the process before proceeding to a Case Management Conference (CMC), which will pave the way for the allocation of trial dates. Defence lawyer, Thapelo...

Ibrahim Mohammed, 32, had spent years deep in the vast forests of Nigeria’s northeastern Borno State as a jihadist fighter when a video message from his mother changed everything. A 2009 uprising by the Boko Haram group triggered Nigeria’s ongoing insurgency, which has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than 3 million. “I received a video message from my mother. She pleaded with me to leave the group, lay down my arms, and return home,” Mohammed told AFP on Friday at a ceremony to mark the end of a rehabilitation programme for former jihadist fighters in Borno’s capital, Maiduguri, the epicentre of the 17-year-long insurgency. “It touched me deeply. I realised that my family still cared about me and wanted me back. That was when I decided to leave the bush and surrender.” Mohammed was among about 720 former fighters who recently completed a state government rehabilitation programme,...
