2 The sisterhood at the Plant Tissue Culture in St Philip facility has become the nurturing force behind a young scientist’s growing ambition to help find a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. Senior agricultural assistant Romelia Dabreo has found more than employment within the laboratory’s walls. She has discovered mentorship, empowerment and a sense of purpose among a close-knit team of women who helped transform her curiosity into a passion for scientific research. Surrounded daily by head of the facility Dr Sophia Marshall, senior laboratory assistants Althea Grace and Deslyn Newton, along with laboratory worker Sandra Alleyne-Belgrave, Dabreo said the environment created by the women around her gave her the confidence to thrive in a field she never imagined entering. “I would say it’s a great opportunity for me because the women here are very nice ladies. They like to share their knowledge and they make me feel comfortable and at...

Trinidad Tobago, Newsday, Inglês - Justyna Burkowska, Dominic Telfer return to Studio Joli in February
2026-06-05 15:35:06
Features Newsday Reporter Friday 30 January 2026 – This February, Studio Joli will host the second joint exhibition for Justyna Burkowska and Dominic Telfer. Cool, lush gouache paintings will be juxtaposed with warm, vibrant oils, all focused on the sights and scenes of the season. Back in the 1970s in Oxford, Telfer had abandoned the idea of art as a vocation. This led to a 40-year career in telecommunications. But his artistic leanings were always simmering under the surface. In Telfer’s own words, “After 40 years, minding machines and databases, it has been a joy to return to Trinidad and paint the local everyday scenes… which are fast disappearing.” This joy is reflected in the paintings themselves and helps form a strong connection with the viewer, said a media release. – Since then, Telfer has become a familiar sight to those who frequent the Queen’s Park Savannah and environs. Many a...

“Potentially useful minds for the country are absorbed into dynamics of social validation, digital spectacle, small narcissistic wars, and emotional superficiality while Haiti goes through one of the greatest crises in its modern history.” There is something profoundly tragic in the way Haiti’s public discourse today seems to collapse into triviality while the country itself collapses in reality. Every day, entire hours are consumed by petty quarrels, ego clashes, public humiliations, digital gossip, “so-and-so said this,” “so-and-so replied that,” “so-and-so is sleeping with so-and-so,” “so-and-so insulted so-and-so,” as if Haiti’s entire media, intellectual, and emotional life were gradually being captured by a vast collective distraction. Meanwhile, the real national questions remain suspended in emptiness: institutional collapse, educational disintegration, structural violence, economic dependency, collective psychological erosion, massive youth migration, the crisis of the state, social misery, and civilizational fragmentation. And yet, what troubles me most is no longer even this mediocrity’s...

(CNS): Patrick Anthony Campbell  (21) and Emmanuel Carter-Wright (21) both pleaded not guilty to a list of offences when they appeared in Grand Court recently for arraignment in relation to the mugging of two tourists. The incident occurred near the Boney Moon beach bar on Seven Mile Beach around lunchtime on 3 December last year. The men are accused of robbing a cruise ship visitor of a gold chain and a pendant from around his neck and assaulting both him and a woman who had come to help him, causing actual bodily harm. Around 5:30pm that same day, Campbell and Wright allegedly mugged a Canadian cruise ship passenger on the beach close to the Kimpton Hotel. The men have denied stealing her bag, which contained a wallet with US$200, a British Columbia driver’s licence, a Scotia Bank credit card and an iPhone. They also denied using the bank card to...
