Opposition Leader Alex Borg has rejected claims that the Nationalist Party is against energy subsidies, describing them as false while pledging that electricity, water and fuel bills would not increase under a government led by him.
In a video statement on Facebook, Borg said that statements by the Labour Party saying that the PN opposes energy subsidies are false.
“In recent days, the Labour Party tried to give the impression that we are against subsidies. That is not true, this is a lie,” Borg said on Wednesday.
He said that under a government led by him, energy costs would remain unchanged.
“I’ll be clear: under a government led by me, electricity, water and fuel bills will not increase. This is a clear promise and a priority for us, because we know what the people want,” he said.
Borg said the public expects reliable energy, stable bills and long-term planning, adding that recent power cuts had exposed weaknesses in the system.
“Everyone remembers what happened in the last two summers, with power cuts, nights in darkness and days of heat, which left people and businesses suffering. Those events should be a lesson for the country,” he said.
He said that energy policy must be proactive rather than reactive.
“With energy, you cannot wait for a crisis to act. You need to plan and invest beforehand,” he said.
Borg said a future Nationalist government would increase investment in renewable energy.
“Malta makes the least use of renewable energy despite being blessed with the sun, the wind and the sea around us,” he said.
He added that the country must reduce its dependence on a single energy source and strengthen its distribution system.
“We will reduce dependency on one source of energy and strengthen distribution so that we do not go through another summer of crisis,” he said.
Borg described this approach as “serious and sustainable politics,” aimed at protecting families, supporting businesses and ensuring long-term stability.
“This is the change that is needed,” he said.
In a one line statement, the Labour Party said that “panic-driven” statements by Borg will not erase his claim that energy subsidies are “short-lived.”
