The Kalona Clinic in the interior part of Small Malaita Constituency, Malaita Province, is in urgent need of improvement, with calls for a modern building design to meet standard healthcare facility requirements. Images of the facility have attracted widespread public attention, prompting concerns over the lack of development.  Some members of the public have questioned why government leaders and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services have not taken action to upgrade such an essential service. Others have pointed out that Kalona Clinic may be the only clinic in Malaita Province still operating from structures made primarily of sago palm and bush materials. According to available information, the clinic has served its surrounding communities for years...

Participants in the recently completed Exercise Coastwatchers have spoken about the new skills they acquired that will help keep Solomon Islands secure. Exercise Coastwatchers, a joint activity betwen the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) concluded earlier this month. It takes its name from the Coastwatchers of World War II, a secret communication network comprised of Australians and Solomon Islanders which reported information to the Allies on military assets moving across the Pacific. True to this legacy, this instance of Exercise Coastwatchers included advanced courses focused on maritime and border surveillance, bringing together students from earlier small boats operator and drone operator courses to further upgrade their skills. The course required students to work together and draw on a wide range of skills in a simulation targeting criminal activity. After receiving information on potential criminals, they planned their mission, and worked with the small...

Our Telekom engineers are working around the clock to restore services By ULUTAH GINA Solomon Star, Gizo Telecommunications services across Western and Choiseul provinces have been severely disrupted following the onslaught of Cyclone Maila, leaving several rural communities cut off from vital communication links. Similarly, in Choiseul Province, affected areas include Kandova, Lengatura, Kumanibae, Varunga and Sambe. “Our key network hardware was heavily ...
