Iraq’s newly elected president nominated businessman Ali al-Zaidi as the country’s prime minister-designate on Monday, after he was endorsed by the country’s main Shia alliance. “President Nizar Amede has tasked Ali al-Zaidi, the candidate of the largest parliamentary bloc, with forming the new government,” the presidency said in a statement. The announcement came shortly after the Coordination Framework, an alliance of Shia factions with varying links to Iran and that had initially nominated Maliki, endorsed Zaidi to be its candidate. The Coordination Framework had initially backed powerbroker Nouri al-Maliki to become the country’s next prime minister, but an ultimatum by US President Donald Trump reshuffled the cards. In January, Trump threatened to stop all support for Iraq if two-time ex-premier Maliki, who has close ties to Iran, returned to power. A warrant of arrest has been issued for Loana Sisifiu after she failed to appear in court for a scheduled ruling on her “no case to answer” submission. Sisifiu is facing 15 counts of conversion, relating to allegations that she dishonestly obtained and converted more than $20,000 from two women. The court previously heard that between January and April 2023 in Honiara, Sisifiu allegedly collected money from the complainants after promising employment opportunities in Australia. The funds were reportedly intended to cover airfare, visas, and other travel-related expenses, including transportation upon arrival. However, it is alleged that the money was instead used for her own benefit. The charges have undergone several amendments, initially filed as 17 counts of false pretences, later reduced to 15 counts of simple larceny, and now standing as 15 counts of conversion. Five Maliangarrison towns — Kati, Bamako, Sevare, Gao and Kidal — were targeted simultaneously over the weekend. The Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists of the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) in coordination with the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), mainly composed of Tuareg rebel independence movements, claimed responsibility. Nina Wilen, director for the Africa Programme at Egmont Institute for International Relations, told DW the events are “unprecedented in Mali’s history” and showed how “strong JNIM has become over the past year.” Wilen added: “The fact that the Malian military intelligence has not been able to detect that these attacks were about to take place is a major failure for them.”  Sadio Camara, Mali’s defense minister, was killed on Saturday, April 25, in a suicide bombing carried out by JNIM.
