Guyana’s Civil Aviation Training School (CATS) has been officially accredited by TRAINAIR, a global training program under the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
A delegation from Guyana will travel to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to receive the certification at the Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS).
Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, announced the achievement during the Parliamentary Committee of Supply’s budget discussions for 2025. He highlighted that this accreditation allows Guyana to train not only its own aviation professionals but also individuals from the Caribbean and beyond.
The certification is expected to generate revenue as international trainees will pay for courses in Guyana. Minister Edghill called it a significant milestone for the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), which has been working to recover from financial losses. The authority previously had over $1 billion in reserves but faced a major deficit in recent years.
An ICAO assessment team recently visited Guyana to evaluate CATS before granting it TRAINAIR Plus certification. CATS, already certified by both the GCAA and the Guyana National Accreditation Council, now meets international standards to conduct ICAO-approved courses in various aviation fields.
With TRAINAIR Plus accreditation, Guyana can also develop its own ICAO-approved training courses and share them with other TRAINAIR Plus members worldwide. Minister Edghill emphasized that this achievement strengthens Guyana’s position in the global aviation industry and opens doors for further growth and international recognition.
Current courses include courses on flying drones and refresher courses for air traffic controllers.
TRAINAIR is widely used by civil aviation authorities, airlines, and airport operators to improve the safety and efficiency of aviation personnel training.
