Dodoma — MEMBERS of Parliament have called for a shift in road financing, citing inadequate funding, poor connectivity and unequal allocation of resources as major constraints to economic growth and service delivery. Contributing to the 2026/27 Prime Minister’s Office budget estimates in the National Assembly, legislators proposed new financing approaches, including allowing local authorities to borrow from financial institutions, to accelerate road construction and rehabilitation. Kinondoni Member of Parliament, Abbas Tarimba said despite some progress, road coverage remains inadequate, especially in urban areas experiencing rapid population growth. “Kinondoni has a road network of 198.34 kilometres, but only 58 kilometres are paved, that is just 29 per cent,” he said. Dodoma — MEMBERS of Parliament (MPs) have urged the government to slash some levies on fuel imports as part of measures to control the rising fuel prices, exacerbated by the ongoing Middle East crisis. While contributing to the Prime Minister’s Office budget estimates of 12.5tri/- for the 2026/27 financial year in the National Assembly yesterday, a section of lawmakers commended the government for initiatives taken so far to contain the situation. However, they called for further action, including cutting unnecessary expenditures and increasing subsidies to enable ordinary wananchi to access fuel at affordable prices. Singida West MP, Elibariki Kingu (CCM), said that following measures by state agencies, including the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) to ensure sufficient fuel stocks until July this year, the government should take further decisive steps by reducing some levies. Nairobi — 2027 general elections, which are open to all Kenyans, there are numerous enquiries about the existence of genuine political parties in the country. Are these small groups of individuals trying to gain recognition as presidential candidates or leaders to deceive Kenyans for their own benefit? These and other emerging debates among highly respected Kenyans and scholars are leaving us with wide-open minds and mouths about the course of this upcoming election. Follow us on WhatsApp | LinkedIn for the latest headlines I find Prof PLO Lumumba’s recent critique of Kenya’s political system both provocative and sobering for those who are unaware. He contends that Kenya has failed to establish genuine political parties rooted in ideology due to the historical push for constitutional reform in the 1990s. Rather, the contemporary landscape is characterised by the presence of fluid groups of individuals who are driven more by personal ambition, particularly...

Dodoma — PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed immediate measures to reduce fuel consumption across government institutions and urged citizens to remain calm as global oil supply disruptions push prices upward. Speaking after swearing in newly appointed leaders at Chamwino State House, yesterday, Dr Samia said the ongoing global crisis, linked to tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran, has disrupted oil supply chains and triggered rising fuel costs worldwide. She, however, said that Tanzania remains relatively better positioned, with fuel prices still lower compared to several neighbouring countries, despite the global pressures. The Head of State announced cost-cutting steps within government operations, including reducing vehicle convoys and introducing shared transport for officials, while cautioning traders against unjustified price hikes on food and other goods, particularly for stock purchased before the current fuel price increases. Dar es Salaam — MINISTER for Home Affairs, Mr Patrobas Katambi has warned citizens against spreading rumours that their private parts have been stolen, saying the government will take strong action against such claims, which have already led to injuries and deaths.
