Dar es Salaam — LOVE is that famous four-letter word that has inspired countless songs and sonnets. But what is it about this powerful emotion that makes our hearts thump, minds race, and palms sweat? “Love is a powerful feeling, and it is often a little different depending on what a person is giving to or receiving from the person who they love,” says Heidi Moawad, MD, an associate editor of Neurology and Clinical Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University. “For example, maternal love is often protective. And romantic love will eventually also become protective as people grow closer to each other and learn each other’s vulnerabilities, but it doesn’t usually start out that way.” Falling in love can be a thrilling, emotional experience, but what exactly is happening in your brain when you fall in love? It can feel like your brain has switched to vacation mode without...

Washington — THE International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group’s private sector investment arm, has pledged to work with the Government of Tanzania in implementing the National Development Vision 2050 by enabling greater private sector participation in large-scale strategic projects, particularly in energy and railway infrastructure. The commitment was made by IFC Vice President Ethiopis Tafara during discussions with a Tanzanian delegation led by Minister for Finance, Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar, at the institution’s headquarters on the sidelines of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington D.C., United States. IFC commended Tanzania for opening up significant opportunities for private sector engagement in the Vision 2050 agenda, including investment in electricity generation and distribution as well as the port sector. Nairobi — DEBATES in Kenyan politics, despite being matters for Kenyans to decide, offer a valuable lesson in power politics and how leaders can use their power to undermine the objectives of those who elected them. The issue of obstructing animal corridors in the Maasai Mara National Park may appear political; however, from an animal welfare perspective, it violates their freedom, as these corridors are essential to their survival and to attracting tourists and foreign currency. The recent claims by former Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who, by virtue of his position, was privy to sensitive national security data indicating that wildlife corridors in the Maasai Mara are being blocked by alleged land grabbing, have not only sparked an environmental debate but also opened a new and potent political battleground in Kenyan politics. At the heart of land grabbing lies a complex intersection of land ownership, conservation economics, elite interests...

The family of 31-year-old Ashly Robinson is seeking answers after she died while on holiday in Zanzibar. Her partner Joe McCann had his passport withheld as investigations continued. McCann, 45, had been cooperating with authorities as a witness. The police had previously said that McCann was not suspected of wrongdoing. Robinson had traveled to Zanzibar to celebrate her birthday after turning 31 on April 5. She was found unconscious in her villa and later died in the hospital. The police had indicated that she might have attempted to take her own life. Robinson’s parents said her death in Tanzania “doesn’t make any sense” and were seeking answers. Reports suggested the couple had a misunderstanding before hotel staff separated them, but details remained unconfirmed. Robinson’s parents have said they are cooperating with authorities as investigations continue. Source link
