Buschauffeur M.R. meldde zich op maandag 3 maart omstreeks 20.19 uur, bloedend, bij het politiebureau De Nieuwe Grond. Hij verklaarde dat hij kort daarvoor aan de Indira Gandhiweg, ter hoogte van de Hannaslustweg, met een houwer was gekapt door een andere buschauffeur. Volgens M.R. werd hij door zijn collega aangevallen omdat deze van mening was dat hij roekeloos voor hem reed, meldt de politie van Regio Midden Suriname. Waterkant.Net verneemt dat het slachtoffer een kapverwonding aan zijn rechterpols heeft opgelopen. Na het voorval liep de verdachte terug naar zijn bus en reed weg. Het slachtoffer werd per ontboden ambulance afgevoerd naar de Spoedeisende Hulp van het Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo. De verdachte, W.E., meldde zich woensdagmiddag bij hetzelfde politiebureau, waarna hij werd aangehouden en voorgeleid aan een hulpofficier van justitie. Na overleg met een lid van het Surinaamse Openbaar Ministerie werd W.E. in het belang van het onderzoek in verzekering gesteld....

At least two firemen were injured as the blaze swept through the old wooden building leaving teachers, parents and students in shock. The cause of the fire is not known at this point. Mae’s launched in 1992 by Mayfield French as the first private school, after the government had taken over all educational institutions in the 1970s, had developed a stellar reputation. The school was sold  last year. The primary department was completely ruined while the secondary section was damaged. Fire in Guyana is too frequent – Guyana Times Dear Editor,Fires occurring throughout the country are becoming too frequent. The recent early morning fire that school children and school staff were able to escape has brought the issue of fire prevention and fire suppression to the forefront once again. Whether it be Government negligence, arson, or unexpected and unpreventable occurrence, we must relook our approach to fire suppression.It is time to agree on a nationwide solution, and ensure its implementation. We can no longer afford to hope for the best and not prepare for the worst.No school in the country should be allowed to operate without a sprinkler system that is connected to a water pump house which has high-pressure water lines and a dedicated source of water that it can pull from.The schools must have fire alarms that trigger a response...
