Wayne “Bully” Petersen of Bully and the Musical Kafoonaz has been knocking people down with quelbe since 1991. (Photo by Anne Salafia) Fifteen years after he was born in Frederiksted, Wayne “Bully” Petersen picked up his first ukulele. It was a life-shaping gesture. By the time he passed away on Wednesday, Petersen had become a bandleader, musician, author, and promoter of Crucian culture. Gov. Albert Bryan, Jr. and Delegate to Congress Stacey Plaskett led those paying tribute to Petersen in condolence statements issued since then. The governor called Petersen “a guardian of our Crucian heritage, a passionate storyteller, and an unwavering preserver of the traditions that define us as a people.” Bryan also called Petersen “an outstanding human being.” Many of those who enjoy V.I. folk music has heard the sounds of Bully and the Musical Kafoonaz. In an article appearing in the Source, Petersen explained the word “kafoon” meant...

Arturo Alfonso Schomburg (Photo courtesy Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture/New York Public Library) Black history is human history. If we are celebrating Black History Month, which is every day, then let us start from the beginning of human history. According to the Holy Bible, “the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and became a living being” Genesis 2:7. Why celebrate Black history? The answer is simple: because no matter what your race, your very own great, great, great ancestors came from Africa. Olasee Davis (Submitted photo) Like so many of us growing up in the Western educational system, we were never taught about ourselves and the greatness of our ancestors. Black people in the Western world were basically taught that they were inferior and that they never contributed anything to humankind. As a result, so many...

The V.I. Justice Department has asked for a stay in Richardson Dangleben Jr.’s murder case, citing a Feb. 5 memorandum from U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi reviving the death penalty and lifting the moratorium on federal executions. Dangleben faces first-degree murder, assault and gun charges in the July 4, 2023 shooting death of V.I. Police Detective Delberth Phipps Jr. in Hospital Ground on St. Thomas. He has pleaded not guilty, and federal prosecutors signaled in February that they would not seek the death penalty. However, following a Jan. 20 executive order by President Donald Trump entitled “Restoring the Death Penalty and Protecting Public Safety,” Bondi notified all Justice Department employees that a “Capital Review Committee” would be evaluating all decisions to not seek such punishment in eligible cases charged between Jan. 20, 2021 and Jan. 19, 2025, that have not yet resulted in a conviction. Bondi’s memorandum states that “absent...

Delegates from the Sixth Constitutional Convention met Tuesday. (Source photo by Diana Dias) Fifteen delegates to the territory’s Constitutional Convention took the oath of office two weeks ago. After a few false starts, they convened Tuesday and clashed while hammering out a procedural framework for drafting a sixth attempt at a U.S. Virgin Islands Constitution. Tuesday’s session, which was held in person and virtually over Zoom, was plagued by technological issues, but communication problems between delegates appeared to extend further. As members began discussing the adoption of rules, some delegates questioned whether they had the most up-to-date copy, which was sent out at 10 a.m. Tuesday — the same time the meeting started. A motion to adopt those rules was immediately met with objections. “The rules are very important, and I think that’s why, over the last three months, the St. Thomas-St. John delegation has reached out to all of...
