BANK of Zambia (BoZ) Governor Denny Kalyalya says change of currency has nothing to do with next year’s general elections, adding that any government would have done so because of the compelling reasons. BoZ will be introducing a new family of Zambian currency, which will include K200 and K500 notes, whose launch is set for March 31, 2025.
Zambia currently has six bank-notes – K2, K5, K10, K20, K50 and K100 and four coins – 5 Ngwee, 10 Ngwee, 50 Ngwee and K1 – in circulation.
The new notes will be K10, K20, K50, K100, K200 and K500 while the new coins will be 5 Ngwee, 10 Ngwee, 50 Ngwee, KI, K2 and K5.
On ZNBC TV’s Sunday Interview programme, a caller, Frank Bwalya, asked Dr Kalyalya if there is any connection between the currency change and next year’s general elections.
