Leader of the Opposition Aubrey Norton reiterated his unwavering support for the government and people of Guyana in confronting any potential threats from Venezuela.
“We believe first and foremost we have to protect our territorial integrity, and in that regard, the government has our support,” Norton told Stabroek News yesterday.
He said that while the opposition supports the government’s stance, concerns had been raised which President Irfaan Ali had agreed to address. Among them was the need for more active diplomatic efforts and a continuous public education campaign on the issue.
“Reaching out to various countries, advocating for a public education programme for the Guyanese population, those are some of the things we’ve discussed,” Norton added.
Norton also expressed confidence in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and its ability to defend the country’s sovereignty, especially following the attack on soldiers at the Makapa GDF outpost. He advocated for more resources and training for the military, emphasizing that the unique geographical challenges of Guyana require tailored defence capacity.
