FILE PHOTO: Trump and Jinping meeting. Trump likely to decouple the world’s most important geopolitical relationship and increase risk of global disruption COMMENT | IAN BREMMER | Donald Trump’s return to the White House will almost certainly trigger an unmanaged decoupling of the world’s most important geopolitical relationship, increasing the risk of global economic disruption and crisis. After all, Chinese leaders will be far less conciliatory than they were during his first term. U.S. President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, managed to keep US-China tensions contained in 2024. But when Donald Trump returns to the White House this month, he will end this fragile stability, drive an unmanaged decoupling of the world’s most important geopolitical relationship, and increase the risk of global economic disruption and crisis. Trump will begin his second term by announcing fresh tariffs on Chinese goods, with the goal of forcing a new economic agreement...

LOS ANGELES, the United States | Xinhua | TikTok announced Friday that it will be forced to shut down its services for the 170 million users in the United States on Sunday unless U.S. President Joe Biden provides a “definitive” assurance. The announcement came though Biden’s administration indicated that it will not immediately enforce a law intended to ban the popular video platform nationwide. In a brief statement on its website, TikTok, headquartered in Los Angeles, warned that unless the Biden administration acts urgently to reassure U.S. companies that provide essential services to the platform, the shutdown process will be unavoidable. “Unless the Biden Administration immediately provides a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers assuring non-enforcement, unfortunately TikTok will be forced to go dark on January 19,” it said. Earlier on Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a law forcing TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell the...

Many watched in shock on television as their homes burned ANALYSIS | AGENCIES | Since fires first began popping up around a densely populated, 25-mile (40-kilometer) expanse north of downtown Los Angeles on Jan.07, they have burned more than 12,000 structures, a term that includes homes, apartment buildings, businesses, outbuildings and vehicles. No cause has been identified yet for the largest fires. The disaster in America’s second-largest city took homes from everyone — from waiters to movie stars. The level of devastation is jarring even in a state that regularly confronts massive wildfires. The flames hit schools, churches, a synagogue, libraries, boutiques, bars, restaurants, banks and local landmarks like the Will Rogers’ Western Ranch House and a Queen Anne-style mansion in Altadena that dated back to 1887 and was commissioned for wealthy mapmaker Andrew McNally. Internationally renowned celebrities who have lost their homes include Mel Gibson, Leighton Meester and Adam Brody,...
